... it freezes for a sec , I get the start-up sound and the desktop 'refreshes' .
Personal Menu is gone.
Contact icon below browser icon reappeared.
Presence green icon appears as well - even though it had been disabled.
Other statusbar applets (adv. backlight control, status bar hours, loadapplet) are gone. Oddly they are shown enabled when I checked in Control panel.

So what happened ?
Did a desktop routine reboot ? (I was just browsing this forum, no big load.)

Has this happened to someone else?

It means that hildon crashed and when it crashes it restarts itself, thus returning to default. By going to control panel and exiting it just returns it back to normal.

It's happened to other people for different reasons. Usually due to a panel problem like status bar hours.

Hm, okay.
Also I remembered that the battery meter sprung from half way down to full. Weired.

It happens too if the memory is used up.

I get the Hildon-crash too, usually in conjunction with my bluetooth keyboard connecting.

Just a note about your whacked-out desktop; don't go into your settings and try to set all of your applets and statusbar icons back up. Everything goes back to pre-crash settings after a reboot.

You don't have to reboot. You can just go to control panel -> panel

Then just click over to panel icons (where you can choose which statusbar icons you want showing) and then click ok. No need to reclick anything there besides navigating there and clicking ok. After a few seconds it'll return to normal. Then click the applets you want again on the home screen (takes the longest).

Yes, but only personal-menu returns, no luck for the desktop applets.

Reboot is the simplest for me, and not too slow.
