Now that I have OS 2008 installed on a 1GB SD card (mmc2 - thanks penguinbait!), I have enough room to install a boat-load of applications I never tried out before on my N800.

I wanted to download the USA East (733 MB) map for the Map program, but it fails to download because it's downloading to my remaining 64 MB FAT partition on my mmc2 card. I can't find any options to change the map download directory.

Will I need to switch out my 16GB (mmc1) card with the 1GB (mmc2) card, boot off the 1GB card as mmc1, then download the map to the 16GB mmc2 card? After downloading, if I switch cards back, will Map be able to use the map now on mmc1?

I don't currently have any external GPS device, I was hoping I could just use some map program for checking out the layout of my city (which I'm new to) in case I need to find certain locations while I'm on the road. Is there any other program besides Map that would work better for my need? I might eventually get a GPS device.

Many thanks!

PS: There are too many threads involving "map" etc. so I couldn't find an answer.

Hey, I have a similar question. I'd like to move apps out of the RAM and into the MMC1 or mmc2 without dual boots, etc, but usually the system doesn't give me an option, just a folder to stick the icon.
Anyway to change that?

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong but-
Most apps must run from linux filesystems, thus they can't be put on FAT partitions.
Most of the built in apps are very hard coded. Example Maps want's it data storage on the internal drive on my N810. Many of the maemo apps are bettter behaved and let you move your data folders around.

Heres what I did to solve this problem:

Open file manager and simply drag and drop the 'map' directory from mmc1 to mmc2. Then when you run maemo map, it will find the map directory. From this point on, any map downloaded will go to the new locatiion.
