When I visit for example us.gizmodo.com I get redirected to m.gizmodo.com, the mobile site. I've experienced this with other sites also. It seams that the browser is recognized as a mobile and less capable browser. Is there a way to prevent this?

Change the "User-Agent" string sent by the browser. Search for specific instructions.
