Thanks to lardman for bringing https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=987 to my attention (well, I say "my" but more of a general thing on #maemo ) and fanoush for posting in the bug what needs to be changed.

Simply, as root, :
sed -i s/'gtk-keynav-wrap-around = 0'/'gtk-keynav-wrap-around = 1'/ /usr/share/themes/<your favourite theme>/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
Now you can press the up button when at the top of a menu to get to the bottom.

The more permanent method:

You mean this?
Code:
sed -i 's/gtk-keynav-wrap-around = 0/gtk-keynav-wrap-around = 1/' /usr/share/themes/*/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

Why oh why isn't this the default. There are so many poorly chosen defaults like this in Maemo that I wonder if Nokia will ever get it right.

Some people count on ending on the bottommost menu item when they mash the down button. It's personal preference.

Given time, and continued work, the community edition should become a viable alternative to what Nokia ships. And while I hope the control panel in the community edition doesn't become Land of One Thousand Checkboxes to tweak everything, options for some simple departures from Nokia's Maemo UI spec like this might make sense.

I'd certainly like the option.

i just hope the new N900 (whenever, and in whatever form, it ships) do not result in a brain drain from said community edition...

still, i guess the N8x0 is more widespread and established then the 770 was...

My wish isn't more options, but sensible defaults based on usability principles. The expert/niche usecase options can be put into config files to keep the GUI clean IMHO.
