Now this looks very interesting:
http://blog.gustavobarbieri.com.br/2...nment-preview/

Along with all the summer of codes projects the future for canola is indeed looking pretty bright.

"The roadmap includes fast UPnP server and control point, as well as GPS/maps and other car useful services."

I hope this will be a nice UI on top of openstreetmap with offline routing. That would be awesome!

Wow, simply wow. Now that's is very nice. I'm really hoping this can be delivered to the tablets sometime soon and imagine the enhancements it can get from running on OMAP3 for the new Maemo device with OpenGL ES support...it's gonna be nice.

Here's hoping.

That's our plan. And not just Nokia tablets, but OpenMoko and others as well, however the target so far is hw fixed inside cars, with displays equal or equal than N8x0 series (>=4").

Maps will probably come as separate UI rendering and backend to provide map tiles and routes. The idea is to do partnership with map providers in order to provide DB and offline route. OpenStreet will be an option for sure, but for most places it is still too barebones, Brazil for instance.

So can you tell when and where can I get a Canola car powered by Maemo?

(for once it's not me getting the question!)

@barbieri, this is great news! I'm very excited to see this and I hope that all this really becomes a reality. I'm sure MANY other people will use it in the everyday scheme to basically replace their in-car touchscreen music players and GPS with this. It could surely change the way people travel and watch videos/listen to music while in their car.

Of course not LOL

Although, do you really think telling them not to do that would stop them? x]

Sure, but still would be killer to have in areas where the coverage is good enough that you can use it for driving, and when it's not good enough you can help the community by adding the missing pieces.

I also think that just doing the recording of the track in the background and have some way of submitting that to openstreetmap could be a huge boost for a country like brazil. Maybe you can work with the cloudmade guys.

I don't really understand the point of Canola attempting to pretty much duplicate all the functionality already present in the tablets. Then to see that the accepted Summer of Code projects were pretty much ALL Canola projects duplicating stuff we already have, like IM... ugh.
