Previously, the reason we couldn't have dropbox on maemo was because the closed source portion of the program isn't compiled for ARM processors.

Well, they've now released an Iphone version... http://www.getdropbox.com/iphoneapp

Theoretically, is it possible to extract the non-free part of the Iphone program and use that, along with the open source part compiled for maemo? This isn't something I have any experience of, but I'll happily have a crack at it if someone can confirm I'm on the right track? For anyone who isn't following, the Iphone has ARM processors.

Dropbox would really make my life easier - Conboy notes, Anki decks, music and documents all synced automatically to the n810 is the dream. No more clunky unison sessions and hand editing config files for each sync.

One thing I have been thinking those last days is about porting to Maemo the ubuntu-one client. The client it's totally opensource and available at launchpad (https://launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client).

And it's developed in python, so the porting should be more or less easy, after substituting pygtk by its pymaemo couterparts.

What do you think?

One problem of this approach is that I don't know how to filter which contents would I like to synchronize between my noteboook-desktop and my maemo device, as for sure I do not want to synchronize everything.

Dalonso-great idea. It's a shame you can't run multiple accounts with Ubuntu One. If we can figure a way to do that, it would work fine.

I don't mind running both Ubuntu One and Dropbox on my main pc, so I can use Ubuntu One to sync with the n810 and Dropbox for general backup.

I can imagine Dropbox being very useful on a Maemo device, but on the desktop I found it to have a couple of problems.

The first problem is that all files to be synchronized need to be in the Dropbox directory, and not anywhere in the file system. You cannot use symlinks to get around this, unless they are made in the original locations, still having the files in the Dropbox directory.

The second problem is that you cannot choose which computers sync with particular directories, so you have to have all files on all computers.

I really liked everything else about Dropbox, but because of these two problems I had to stick with another similar program from... Microsoft. Live Mesh.

I also start to like Live Mesh, do you use it on an N810?
