Hello everyone,

I'm very interested in buying the N900, but I have one thing that holds me back from pre-ordering one.
Does the N900 have Turkish as UI and virtual keyboard language? If not, will/can it be added later?
Thanks for the answers

I guess N900 won't have Turkish (at least UI) out of the box — it seems we are simply left out with no apparent reason.

Yes, as 150 other countries/languages are "left out with no apparent reason".
Oh wait, maybe localization and translation costs money.... ;-))

Well, I know loads of people (including myself) who wouldn't require even a single cent; if asked to

How easy would it be to do a community translation of the Nokia UI in whatever language and make it available through Extras? I remember reading a blog entry by Quim about this long ago, but I'm not sure if it's technically possible and legal for Maemo 5.

A Turkish UI would make the device more attraktive to the ~4 million Turkish people living in western Europe, mainly in Germany (where the N900 is sold with a German UI).

Of course you can't simply change the keyboard layout (=the characters printed on the keys), but you could at try to add ı, İ, ş, Ş, ğ, Ğ, ç and Ç to a German layout (that already has ö and ü). You'd still not have the standard Turkish F or Q layouts that way, but in the end you might have a fully localized user interface and the ability to input all national characters... if maybe with odd Fn-combinations.

Turkish onscreen keyboard layout is supported by the latest ukeyboard. I'm working on a port of ukeyboard for Fremantle. It's almost finished and I hope in one week it will be available in extras-devel repository.

So:
  • Turkish language UI: Not included, but possible as a community effort.
  • Turkish hardware keyboard layout: won't happen
  • Turkish characters via hardware keyboard: should be possible
  • Turkish onscreen keyboard layout: available soon

Doesn't sound too bad for me, does it? Now add 70 million potential contributors to the mix...
