I am hoping users of VNC view will be able to post a simple step by step guide to get VNC viewer working. I believe most poeple's difficulty comes at the connecting stage, especially for those with complex router set-ups. I am aware there are a couple of threads on this but none with detailed step by step.

Could someone please post a step by step guide to get VNC working?

For me in particular here are my details (and hence why i think its difficult to connect):
> I want to connect to my PC which runs Vista from my N900
> My internet comes into a small wired router, then by cable to to others before reaching my computer.
> I want to be able to connect from my N900 with both WiFi and mobile internet ideally.

Thanks in advance

The steps are:

1) Set up a VNC server on your Home PC
2) Allow Access through you Router and possibly your firewalla

3) Make sure you can connect to your router from outside you network. You need a static IP address for this (think of it as your networks postal address), or a free service like dyndns.

2) http://www.tightvnc.com/faq.php#vista

3) The same as 1

- Install VNC server on the Vista. make sure it runs. Telnet localhost 5900, make sure you get a link. Remember the local IP, if you are behind router, it'll probably 192.168.something, maybe 10.something. Type "ipconfig" in Command Prompt to get local IP.

- Make sure the server uses VNC password auth

- Link the phone, start the viewer. Phone should have an 192.168.somethign IP (You can check from terminal or via installable applet)

- Connect to to the said Vista _Local_ IP and provide password.

---

If your phone and your router are not on the same side of the router, then you need port forwarding. You need to tell the router to fix your PC IP (e.g., always use 192.168.1.2), then tell it to forward ports 5900 and 5800 from the internet to 192.168.1.2. You need to read the manual, and admin access to the router.

Then the phone links to your internet (exterior) IP, not the 192.168, but the one you get from whatsmyip.org. Note that if your ISP uses NAT to get you Internet, you're cooked.

The guide has nothing to do with VNC and all to do with networking. I suggest you use a PC to debug VNC, then apply settings on phone. Always debug one issue at a time.

I followed the video tutorial but with my n900, and the N900 still says Authentication to VNC server failed. Any suggestions?

Im connecting via WiFi to a computer that is using the same router, but my comp has a wired connection to it.

also if i hover over the VNC icon in my system tray it says not accepting connections, is this normal?
