3g coverage areas show basic info on how far the towers can send/receive. Signal on your phone only shows how well you can see tower, not how well the tower sees you.

TRUE! but i don't have choice.. well, I can still have 3G connection and that's not bad than paying more on AT&T but I don't get 3G.

The coverage maps are not 100% accurate. Before you drop $500 on an N900 it is worth your while to test your area with a loaner device.

My local T-Mo store wouldn't give me a loaner, but a forum member (cheers Medic7051) drove 30 miles to show me his new N900, and let me test T-Mo reception at my home and office. See if you can find someone in your area who will do the same favor for you.

T-Mo service quality varies. It is notoriously poor in some areas, great in others. I'm happy, but I'm a sample of one. Try before you buy.

I have always found tmobile coverage to be fine. Granted their 3g coverage is less than some of the other providers, but when I am able to get it, it is always faster than anything I have experienced on AT&T (cant speak to verizon never had them).
Maybe just me ...

i think the fact that tmobile 3g is higher frequency makes it more finicky reception wise, especially inside buildings. combine that with small coverage footprint, and some people get frustrated.

I usually use the 3g 2g selection applet and just leave it on 2g unless i know I am going to be in an area with 3g for a while. The 3g and 3.5g really suck the battery too.
