I recently discovered that my N900 is not running the latest Nokia firmware so I was looking into how to go about getting it installed. The first place I went to look was the Maemo Wiki which helped me find out what I had to do. I downloaded the latest firmware from the Nokia website, along with the Maemo 3.5 Flasher software for Windows 7. I followed the instructions, and turmed my handset off and ran the software. I held down the 'u' key on my keyboard and plugged my handset into my laptop. Nothing happened, I was left with a charging N900 and a shed load of 'u's on my laptop screen!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I have read the Wiki many times and understand what I have to do, but it just didn't work from the off =S!!

Thanks new_bee for that info, shame it wasn't that clear on the Wiki!!
Also, does the backup get deleted whem the phone is wiped? Are the conversations backed up?

Depends what you're flashing, and where you've put the backup. If you're just flashing the main firmware, the backup will definitely be fine. If you're flashing the eMMC as well, the backup will need to be on the SD card to avoid being wiped. And I'm pretty sure the conversations are backed up, but I've only reflashed the once and can't recall for sure. There have been some reports of issues with restoring contacts though, so I'd suggest doing a full export of those from within the Contacts app just to be sure.
