Hi trips, GNOME KDE are not really window managers are they? they are desktop enviroments that require a window manager.
if you want to start a different window manager through debian chroot you can. This is how I would do it for example with jwm (not a big window manager but the same applies)
run Debian chroot
the result is this

but you have to force keyboard focus. there is a thread somewhere that eplains how to do so:

i have a big problem i think....
errror were encountered while processing:
desktop-base
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
it happens when i try to install any windowing sys.
xfce via synaptic it happens
using the above two examples it happens in chroot
does anyone know to fix this?

I often ignore error messages until they cause a problem : P
OK I just installed xfce desktop enviroment through debian chroot. Boy it took a long while for it to download and unpackage everything but it did work.
here is xfce on the n900

can I ask why you wish to use another window manager or desktop enviroment? If its purely cosmetic and you don't like the look of debian LXDE you can customise it to look more fimiliar eg this is how I have it

easy debian works great and it's one of a must have app on N900. it came with Openoffice and more

i have and use easy debian. its great.
CUE:
maybe im missing something or a gtk package?
i did the xfce4 as you said - got as far a the same error as before.
i use xfce-session. didnt work untill i did xfce4-session BUT its now having a GTK issue...
gtk warning: cannot open display: 1
i tried many different combinations. i used --display alone and it kind of worked. had xfce is now starting image then a pop up but nothing more because it has no window to work in.....
as for why am i doing it? i really just want to see if it can be done. im so excited about what you done - devistated that its not working.
i did the 'xnest' example u supplied.. i got a window opened with a lot of black/white dots and an 'X' cursor but went no further. mouse worked..
i dont see how im doing it so wrong when "we" are all using the same software... maemo & easy debian.
im devistated...

that works but does not bring up a windows...

sorry for not replying sooner trips but you don't need to reflash. hope you haven't reflashed yet, I had to get some sleep, as you could probably tell from the screenshots it was 5am. : )
yes debian chroot is an "app" that installs with easy-debian it should just bring up an xterminal. you shouldn't be missing anything since I haven't really installed anything extra for easy debian.
the GTK error is usually a result of inputing the display name incorrectly. You need to use display :1. display :0 shows nothing because it's what maemo is currently using display :1 is telling it to use the nested X session (the black and white dots with a cursor). so leave that black and white screen open go back to debian chroot and type.
xfce4-session --display=:1
with the equal sign and the colon 1. you should see that in the xnest window xfce starts to load.

I'm pretty sure Gnome or KDE would be unusably slow, just keep that in mind.
I have easy debian running - its groovy!
The "big" windowing systems are available for download - BUT will they work?
There is no "real" option to reboot, therefor seems like there is no way to switch to Gnome or such?
Please someone proove me wrong!!
I'd love to try out some other WM's but I have a low internet connection (VERY low monthly downloads).
Space it not an issue - dedicated 8GB SD.
Speed is not an issue - Maemo is great, this is for fun.
Also my SoC is blazing fast and highly clockable
Please help.......
