I bought two N800 tablets recently, first one from a local CompUSA and then one from Nokia. Both came loaded with the current 2.2006.51-6 software. I had to return both. On both tablets the network connection was highly unreliable. While the N800 would always "connect" to the wifi network it was rarely able to load web pages, showing a "Network Problem" error message.

I tried 4 different wireless routers, three in my office, one in a diner. I tried wep, wpa, and no password protection at all. I tried b only, g only, and mixed. I tried entering the ip and dns numbers manually in the Connectivity control panel. I also tried downloading the N800 Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard and reloading the N800 even though it already had the current software version. I never got reliable useable internet connections. I tried entering an ip address that was within the dhcp range of the router (both unused and used--yes silly I know) and I tried numbers higher and lower than the dhcp range of the router. I tried restarting the router, and of course I tried restarting the N800.

Sometimes the N800 would load web pages for a few minutes and then fail. I tried running the internet radio applet, rarely it would work, usually it could not find the stream. Oddly enough sometimes when the internet radio applet actually worked, web pages would still not load. Rarely the Applications Manager could update the catalog and even download an app but usually it could not. I was able to download the vnc client but I could not get it to connect with a pc on my lan running realvnc server connected by ethernet (yes I restarted the pc). I vnc into this pc all the time from my Mac.

The wireless routers I tried included a new Linksys WRT54G (b/g) with current firmware, an older WRT54G with older firmware, an Apple Airport Express (b/g), and an older Apple (Snow) Airport Base Station (b). The most successful but still abysmal connection was with the older WRT54G in the diner.

I really like the N800. I miss it already. I want it back! But it has to connect to internet services reliably or it is no use to me. Anyone else seeing this? Any theories or thoughts? I called Nokia tech support, we went through everything I had already tried; they had no answer or other suggestions. I am wondering if Nokia recently changed something in the manufacture of the N800 or if there is something in the 2.2006.51-6 software conflicting with something in the latest manufacturing rev. This forum is full of people cheerfully using their N800. What is your secret? Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

A couple of things I would add in trying to decode and sort your network.

1. Do you have terminal installed... if not I recommend it..
then... run ifconfig like so
$ ifconfig
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:606 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:606 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:53402 (52.1 KiB) TX bytes:53402 (52.1 KiB)

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr x0:x9:xF4:x3:3x
inet addr:192.168.0.2 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:64631 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:35638 errors:21 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:44398794 (42.3 MiB) TX bytes:5065691 (4.8 MiB)

This is primarily a tool to show what is happening when you attempt to connect.

2. Have you tried any other "known" good internet spots besides work?

3. Pertaining to Apple gear....http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107427

Bottom line.. test with newer gear. The apple article pertains to older gear that uses EAP. If your running the latest OS from Maemo, then WiFi is initiated first then DHCP. For more on that you can go hear:

http://www.maemo.org/platform/docs/h...nectivityGuide

Hope that heps.
