Hi, I bought a new N900 and have a couple of problems. I wonder if anyone can tell me if they've had similar problems?

1. There are couple of dead pixels (or a very small object under the screen). They are only just visible, but definitely there in the top left corner. Should I return to the seller or just take it into a Nokia Care centre and get a replacement screen?

2. I did a full charge when I got the device, then left it on charge overnight. This morning the battery was less than half full, but was not charging. Is this a known problem, or perhaps teething problems with the new battery? Previous devices I've been able to leave them charging overnight, and the battery would not deplete overnight.

If it means anything, I also updated the firmware to PR1.2 after charging the device.

Did you buy it 2nd hand?

Sorry I didn't mention, it's a brand new phone from Carphone Warehouse (UK).

First download healthcheck. Check to see if there are any dead pixels (or other problems) reported there. If you think you got anything less than a brand-spanking-new-factory-condition phone absolutely return it to the seller. Going through warranty is not worth the hassle if it is a recent purchase.

Number 2 is normal. When the device reaches full power, charging will stop until it's drained down to 80%, at which point itll charge back to full again, and so on.
With a new battery, this can cause some wierd results until the reported charge values stabilise.

For point 1, if you can clearly see the dead pixels you can take it back to carphone warehouse who may simply swap out the phone (if it's less than a month old) however do be aware that with dead pixels, they may technically not be obliged to do so.

I ran HealthChecker and I can see the dead pixels when the screen is red, blue or blank.

I bought the phone online so it might be a pain to return... unless they'll do an exchange in store.

If you bought the phone from CPW you can return it to any CPW store.

Did you charge from the included wallcharger or did you charge from a PC?

I hope to be able to take it to a Nokia Care Centre at some point. However, I would also like to overclock it (possibly before getting it fixed), so I was just wondering: 1, if I modify the kernel, can/will this be detected by the NCC? 2, if so, by restoring the original kernel, will I still be within the warranty, or can/will the original change still be detected?

I had a repair at NCC to the screen on my de-branded N97, which they carried out despite the de-branding, since it was determined the firmware change couldn't have caused the hardware fault. If this isn't the case with the mods of the N900, I will just wait to overclock until after the repairs.
