Can I safely remove unused apps (that are "part" of the OS) if I'm not using them (via ">apt-get uninstall ***** ?"

I'd like to rip out the IM client and replace with gaim. But I'd also like to be able to keep a minimalst app list and manage the ROM/RAM resources.

is not apt-get uninstall is apt-get remove

And yes you can remove the built in client but it takes extensive hacking due to the osso dependecies built in to the chat client...

That was one example, I'd also like to remove the PDF reader since I've installed evince and FBReader.
