Hi all!

New and feverishly experimenting with my also relatively new Nokia N900, it simply happens that the whole thing sometimes doesn't want to boot after some experiment. That means reflashing, boring time consuming etc. Also because there is no 'real' back-up app for the Nokia, all previously installed software needs to be re-downloaded and installed. Now THAT starts to be really annoying.

Isn't it a practical idea to make some kind of program that can boot the phone in some kind of emergency recovery mode and put back an earlier made 'image' of the N900 memory? Now I am not a programmer and not a Linux-expert at all. For Windows Mobile there are such kind of programs. Problem with the N900 is that there is no hard reset, so you can't easily return to some status with basic functionality. Actually, when you think about that this is a bit scary cause it means that when a big crash happens while 'on the road' there is no way to return to a working phone without a computer. And thus, phone conversations ( a rather useful part of a mobile PHONE...) are not possible anymore. It would have been handy if Nokia would have programmed some 'emergency boot' with at least a phone option (and maybe the earlier mentioned recovery option) available.

Maybe there is anyone here who sees such an emergency recovery/phone-option as a challenge to make...?

Greetings,

Ronald.

Without wishing to sound snotty, you need to search before you post.

A search for backup and restore gives you this app that is being polished.

Thanks, mrsellout.

It's kind of funny - BackupMenu seems to be -exactly- what you want, and was - at the time you asked - on the third page of the applications forum. The last post was 8 hours ago. On this forum, "active" topics can easily slip down a few pages, so just skimming doesn't work.

Oh, and if you are looking for another solution: To the best of my knowledge, there isn't one. The best I've seen involves using rsync over ssh to backup... But restoring is not easy(if even -possible-) and would require refashing first.

Hi!

[banging head on the wall] Really stupid I didn't discover this little gemstone, works like a charm! Thanks for the tip. Maybe it is actually an idea to make some list with 'must haves' for new users of the N900, this is defenitely one of them for sure. Missed this one because of the overwhelming amount of software and tools offered. Or maybe I get old, also an option.

Only one wish left: it would be nice if this back-up could be made automatically at set intervals, for example every day or every week

Greetings & thanks,

Ronald.

Hm.. According to the Linux Experts(TM), trying to make a complete backup from inside the OS is asking for trouble - What if you read a file when it's being written?
In reality though, it would seem to be possible - set tar or rsync up with the right options(you have to exclude all the other partiton mount points), then add a few extra static files and you'd have a restorable image.

Did you search the "must have/top apps" threads? I'm pretty sure its on one of them, if not you can go and add it
