Sometimes I misplace my phone and I can't find it.

It would be nice to have an application that could be remotely started - from your laptop for instance - that would make the N900 go 'whistling' (or make any other sound)

Is there anything on the market that could do that?

Thanks for your help.

PS KeyFinder is a (hardware) product that will make your (lost / misplaced) keyring whistle back

You can already do this now with ssh if your phone is connected to your home network. Simply ssh to your phone from PC and play a song/sound. Or even simpler just phone the phone.
May be usefull when needing to locate in a room or if lost in the sofa ect though.

I am still a newbie on ssh territory ;-)

Any simple / short command you could suggest?

I just did.

Apparently it's in silent mode ;-)

You could have a look in the SMSCON application. It's still in development but you might find it useful already.

If you just left it somewhere in the house you could also try calling yourself - my wife does this daily

Its quite a big subject and depends on your home system ie Windows/Linux. Im guessing your on windows so you will need to install something like Cygwin on your home pc/Laptop.

On the N900 you will need openssh which is in the repos not sure which one. Install and set a password when prompted (REMEMBER THIS).
Also if you have not already install MPlayer from repos.
Read this
http://wiki.maemo.org/SSH

Then when all is installed on your PC/Laptop.

Code:
ssh root@yourN900ip
Enter password from earlier openssh setup

Mplayer somesong.mp3
This will play somesong.mp3 on your N900.
That is a very very broad overview but there is a lot of information already out there. Search the forum for ssh and Google Cygwin for windows. Hope this sets you off in the right direction.

You don't need a computer, just use a... telephone, and call your mobile.

SMScon is an N900 complete control utility by sending SMS messages to it. This is handy in case you can't find your phone (e.g. gets lost or stolen). Some of it's main features include replies with GPS coordinate, reverse SSH, and return phonecall
Christos,

is it possible to send it an SMS message that will the N900

- start playing a (preconfigured) sound / alarm
- and starting low volume but then rising ?

It would however be nice if one could have the N900 automatically position itself (direction, angle) on a map of your near surroundings ;-)

In order to execute many actions, in a sequence or something not available already as a command to SMSCON, you can place those in a script and send the command that executes your script.

At the moment sending the "Location" command replies (depending if you have set it to reply in SMS, email or both) with an SMS that has a link to googlemaps and/or a mail that has directly the map portion you're interested.

Have a look in the wiki pages about it before you use it and make your setup according to your mobile plan (some people prefer to avoid charges from SMSs since their plan charges them for each SMS.)
If you have further questions/proposals on it's use you could also post it there: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=60729
