Hi everybody. I hope that's the right place to write.
I want to buy Nokia N900, and install the (in)famous free Ovi Maps .
But there is a problem: Nokia on N900 with Maemo 5 doesn't support natively turn by turn navigation with the maps.
So I ask: Is it possible on Maemo 5 with some modifications, to:
1) Install Ovi Maps
2) Download with Ovi Suite the maps (Example: Italy Maps)
3) Use the maps for free navigation (navigation voice is useless for me, the important thing is turn by turn navigation)

I've read older posts but with no success.

Thanks.

Which "older posts" have you read?
Voice navigation is also possible, if you try hard

Ok, i've found it. http://wiki.maemo.org/Ovi_Maps_Extra_Features . Those extra features permit turn by turn navigation, too. Right?

reading the responses to your perfectly legitimate questions illustrates perfectly why maemo is an evolutionary dead end. people can find the time to post useless responses or complaints about reading earlier posts but not provide info/links.

wish i could help you my friend but i gave up on ovi maps ages ago. and now that my usb port is broken i cant charge the n900 in the car so battery sapping satnav is a non starter.

my advice to you would be - get an android phone.

and dont ever dare ask a question that may have been asked previously (and never criticise the posters that criticise you) it's not like this is supposed to be a community based forum after all is it!?

If you've not already bought the N900, just remember that while turn by turn navigation does work (by following the instructions in the link you provided) it's not as smooth/slick as available in Nokia's Symbian devices.

Please lower your expectations accordingly and you won't be disappointed when you get an N900 and get turn-by-turn nav working

Having said that, I think what the community has managed to achieve is pretty remarkable and works pretty well (enough for my uses)

Enjoy your N900, and welcome to the forum.

if youre willing to pay for it, sygic mobile maps 10 offers true gps navigation.

or shell out a few bucks/euros for sygics mobile maps that seems to be a decent navigation software.
Friend of mine is using this on his n900, and is very happy with it.

So, quick answers:
1) No, it is preinstalled already
2) Yes
3) Yes

But take into account, that there is no offline search like in Symbian Ovi Maps.
