Yesterday I restored a backup with BackupMenu. After that it wil not boot up anymore.

I had the latest CSSU installed on the N900.

http://www.google.com/search?q=CUSS

What should I do now? Can I reflash the system with the latest orginal firmware (PR1.2 or PR1.3?), and then install CUSS again? Or .. ?

And I also cannot access the BackupMenu anymore while booting.

Any help much appreciated.

PS

Some questions pop up:

1) I have a enhanced kernel installed once. Has that maybe interfering with the last CUSS update?

2) And then this: I read

" You need to download the correct firmware for your phone. It is CRITICAL you download a "PR 1.2 version 10.2010.19-1" file "

http://mobiles.bigresource.com/Track/mobiles-Q1nNaTJa/

Should I start all over again with the PR 1.2 prior to the PR 1.3?

= =

Thus use these files for reflashing?

(Netherlands = 'Global' I assume and Flasher is for Vista / XP)

First of all its called CSSU, not CUSS.

If you want to install CSSU and/or would like to have slightly longer battery life (it heavily depends on how you use your device actually) you should install PR1.3 instead of PR1.2

I am guessing your device will not boot is because of missing kernel modules. Lets say when you made your backup via backupmenu, you had kernel-power47 installed. However sometime afterwards you have upgraded that kernel-power47 to kernel-power48. Now backupmenu cannot backup nor restore the actual kernel because the actual kernel sits in a location not accessible by a regular filesystem (i.e. most likely ubifs based as opposed to regular block devices). So when you restored your backup image which only had kernel-power47 kernel modules instead of kernel-power48 kernel modules, your device reboots, loads up kernel-power48 and it goes into kernel panic declaring kernel-power48 modules are not found.

As for the flashing technique, yes those are the correct files but you will lose backupmenu along with many other things that sits in rootfs. Nothing in /opt, /home, or /home/user/MyDocs will be lost when you flash using the combined (aka fiasco) image.

For a guide on flashing read here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_t...ng_the_Flasher

If you have windows 64bit, you might want to have a look at this: http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_t...nd_Workarounds

On kernel-power48: isn't that updated by Faster Application Manager? I run that daily, so it should have picked that up.

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/fapman/

Then: I made a clean backup by BackupMenu that same afternoon.

On the flash: so when I flash I will loose the 1.5GB backup file I made that afternoon? Is there a way to lift the file it of the device ?

Before I start flashing: what do you mean with 'combined aka fiasco' image?

kernel-power48 can be updated in numerous ways apart from using fapman, you can use hildon application manager (known as HAM), you can use apt-get or aptitude.

Assuming you have restored to the clean backup you made that afternoon and that you have not tried installing kernel-power49 (which is unofficial at this stage). It is most likely some other program you have installed which made your device bricked.

About flashing, as long as you don't flash with the eMMC image (it is clearly noted in the tablets-dev website, even on the filename itself) you won't lose your 1.5GB backup file

When I was referring to combined aka fiasco, I meant that in the filename you see for flashing the firmware (no not the flasher tool, the other one) is noted as combined:

RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin 200174197 PR 1.3 version 20.2010.36-2 Latest Maemo 5 Global release for Nokia N900

That `combined' I call it as fiasco. They mean exactly the same thing otherwise.

Thanks for the explanation, tuxsavvy, I was a bit too quick with my reply (should have read the maemo.org page better) ;-)

One more question: I do see there is an option to flash without overwriting rootfs. That would not hurt to try, would it?

Flashing only the kernel from a FIASCO image (expert topic!)

http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_t...rt_topic.21.29

If you only want to flash a kernel from a FIASCO image without overwriting your rootfs (e.g. because you tried out a different kernel and that didn't work) you can use the following flasher command instead of the one above:

sudo ./flasher-3.5 -F <firmware-image> --flash-only=kernel -f -R

This will flash the kernel from the FIASCO image and then reboot your device. The rootfs will not be touched by this. NB a kernel usually needs matching modules in rootfs, so odds are your kernel from FIASCO image won't work either, if you messed up the modules in rootfs - you need to flash whole COMBINED/FIASCO image then to recover.

Question is: ... which kernel do I use ? ;-)

Basically, in order to restore your backup taken with backupmenu, the kernel first needs to be the same one that was in use when you took the backup. So, from a phone you've never laid hands on before, you
  • make sure your backup is somewhere else, like on a microSD
  • flash to PR1.3 (you shouldn't have to flash eMMC, but, if your backup is elsewhere, you can...)
  • install backupmenu and latest kernel-power first
  • insert microSD, boot to backupmenu, restore from backup
  • reboot into maemo

I wouldn't try flashing just a Nokia kernel if you were using kernel-power previously. Flash PR1.3, then allow kernel-power to do its thing, then restore your backup.

Thanks, magick777.

I do have an older backup on the internal MicroSD, so I could try that one, after following your instructions.

Both you and tuxsavvy thanks for the quick help!

(and the subsequently 'moral support' ;-) )
