Hello everyone,

Just bought the 770 and although I don't know how to use it too well yet, I'm loving it! My Ipaq is feeling neglected already!

Problem is, is that I'm having incompatibility issues with 90% of the software that I've tested from the application catalog.

Now I know that some people have suggested re-compiling the software so that it is compatible with the OS 2006 edition v. 3.2006.49-2 software that came with this device, but I have no idea how to do that...my Linux knowledge is essentially non-existent. The thing is, many of the newbie lists recommend software such as GAIM, Midnight Commander, a networking utility, and some games (tetris clone, snakes, bejeweled) to name a few. So far, none of these applications have worked. The only application I've had success with is FBReader, which is great, but I was hoping for more software. Is there anything I can do as a quick fix?

I could upgrade to 2007, but others have stated that it is not ready for prime time, and is there mainly for development and hacking. If necessary, is it possible to downgrade to 2005? I am sure the incompatible software SHOULD run in 2006, but so far I've had no luck! I've had no luck with this or other forums to no avail! Please help a newbie!

Can you paste here the repositories you are using for some of the apps that don't install? It sounds like you are using the wrong ones... there should be a ton of stuff out there for OS 2006, arguably more than there is for OS 2007. You should be using repositories that include references to either mistral, scirocco or gregale but not bora.

I was just using the the browser and following links to various apps on the maemo site using the device and trying to install programs from there. I thought it would be slightly similar to Windows Mobile where you can grab cabs for your specific processor and install them directly from a website, but that's how I've been getting all the errors.

So lets say I wanted to install Battlegweled. Would I point my web browser on the handheld to http://openbossa.indt.org.br/games/b...weled.install? (found using the link on http://maemo.org/downloads/games/).

The Battlegeweled install file looks OK - it contains a mistral repository for OS 2006... when you try to install it, what problem are you getting? Does it prevent you from installing the game (if so, why? App Manager should state which dependencies are missing or in conflict) or does it fail during the install (check the Application Manager log via Tools -> Log... for more detail).

I tried installing tux pux. Since it had a dependancy package, i tried to install that first using the link "http://nxdomain.org/770/maemo-games-startup_0_2.0_arm.deb"

The error i had was "incompatible software". The log revealed that the exact error was:
"Package must have "Section: user/FOO" to be considered compatible".

Is this a restriction based on which user is attempting to install an application? I saw an article outlining how to get root in the wiki but not sure if this is required to install a simple app or dependency.

Milhouse: You were right. I googled around and found some sites where I could grab the libraries manually and things are getting better. Still having some problems installing some GPS software, but I now know which way to go so that shouldn't be too hard to fix.

I've installed a bunch of stuff, and am currently struggling with Pidgin...it'll take some time though.
