I am not sure if this is possible but I had this idea today because of a problem with the usb on my n900... Basically the usb on the phone seems to be soldered properly(I had added some more soldering for protection before summer) but it doesn't charge properly, so I think that it is the plastic thing with the pins inside the usb receiver that it is broken...

So after all of this(I am not sure what I am going to do about this problem ), I was thinking of a usb not soldered on the board, but one like the audio receiver! In this way, it will be better for replacing it in case of something bad happens and I think that it might help maybe with anyone who wants to do usb moddings(maybe?)!
Maybe it is a good idea for solving such a painful issue and it might be a plus for the neo900!

Kind of off-topic?
I believe the Neo900 is drafted to use a USB-OTG (MicroAB) and through hole mounting.
Either way I don't expect the Neo900 to have SMT USB mounting issues.

Sorry if this is off-topic... I thought it was the proper place.

I wasn't really talking actually about the SMT USB mounting issues but for the broken pins inside the usb... I mean that for me, now, on my n900 there isn't any problem with the soldered usb but with the inside of it, which means that it needs to get replaced and it is going to be a pain to do that properly without destroying anything!

Oh ... I see, well the Micro USB connector is designed so the cable end takes the wear. A Micro USB port can have >10K mating cycles so it's unlikely the port will wear.

Fair comment.

The great thing about the Neo900 is it's open, so all you have to do is ask for the part number and you can order a replacement port.

Also being through hole it should be much easier to replace.

I really like the whole idea about the Neo900 but I don't have the money/time/knowledge right now to help you guys further with this!
I hope that you will get it ready and give a new breathe to n900

Keep up the good work!

bill_klpd, a nice idea! So I think you can find me mentioning similar idea a few years back in USBfix thread or dunno where :-)
Alas it would need mods to the case, we can't do that for Neo900. If however you or we can find a USB receptacle component with spring loaded contacts to PCB, we at least could get the matching footprints on the PCB to facilitate you hackers modding it yourselves :-D

Thanks
Well I don't know if we can find a premade micro usb receptacle component with spring loaded contacts, but after a really fast search on google I found these things(which seems pretty nice as an idea!):

And maybe we can use it with something like this
