I think they fear that there is no market for it. And they may be even right :-) Nokia and others moved to miniSD/microSD.
I am thinking about hacking miniSDHC card into N770. It should be possible. My idea is to stick/solder miniSD to SD adapter (that comes with each miniSD card) permanently on top of current mmc slot and cut a slot hole for the card in the black plastic on the right side when display is up (i.e. not on the bottom) and let the mmc slot otherwise untouched. One could either insert normal mmcmobile card via original doors or remove it and insert miniSD into the adapter from the right side. Both cannot work at the same time but it is not a problem with 4 or 8 gb miniSD cards. I have not opened my 770 yet but from outside it looks like the adapter should fit in.

Isn't there room to just yank out the RS-MMC slot and simply replace it with the miniSD adapter? It would make cutting up the 770's body redundant.

This may be a plan B :-) I'd prefer to not to kill existing slot. Cutting plastic body seems like less harm than killing the slot to me.
Maybe for this plan using microSD to miniSD adapter would be easier. But currently microSD cards with >=4GB capacity are not that common.

Not today or tomorrow :-) I haven't decided to buy the miniSD card yet and also there is some possibility I might get dead N770 from some board member here so I'll probably wait until I get it (to have spare black case and to make trial run on killing the mmc slot :-) Also I currently don't have pressing need for 4GB yet. Still I'd like to do this mod just for the sake of doing it so I'll eventually do it anyway but not now.
Actually I will open my device soon and try empty adapter to see how it will fit but I won't cut/solder anything yet.

I think I might attempt to remove the memory card door and use a 4GB Transcend MMCplus.

You need patched kernel for that. Once you remove the card, Nokia kernel waits with card detection until the door is closed. I already mentioned it somewhere here, it is just commenting out one line. I am not sure any kernel from me has this enabled but let me know if you want such kernel. With this patch card is detected by kernel when inserted but you still need to mount it by hand since the automatic card mounting feature waits for the 'door closed' event.
Anyway, I contacted sales support at Kingston Technology to ask whether they had any plans in the pipeline to introduce higher capacity MMCmobile cards, this morning I received a reply...NO! In fact Kingston's exact words were:
