It looks like Nokia is coming up with a possible game changer?

Anyway...have a look at this thread, the poster has some interesting insights

Hardware Keyboard makes the difference for me. I have not yet went to a phone without a keyboard and won't buck the trend now. Data entry using a touch interface is not comfortable, the typing is not reliable requiring the great reliance on auto correction features, takes up screen real estate, and for the most part the phones tend to make some stupid bleeping noises on each key entry to indicate an input. This is not part of the experience I am willing to pay for.

Also commercial success of a virtual keyboard is not definatively proven. The proper way of testing this is having two models of the same phone which is only different based on the presence or absence of a keyboard. Which would sell more if both the same market audience was targeted, the same marketing campaign was used, and the price points for the items were marginally separate if not equal? As of now, we don't know because it hasn't been done.

Keyboard for me is definitely a value added item. Is it a deal breaker ... to early to tell, but I now want to know how easy Nokia will make obtaining this dev phone? How many hoops will they make devs who necessarily don't develop for meego jump through in obtaining this phone.

Another stupid move by Nokia, but by now not really a suprise in how many ways Nokia management can screw things up. I remember reading something on the rumor mill saying that carriers had issue with the keyboard slide mechanism being too flaky ... but this was also when the rumors were that this was going to run an Intel atom. In any case a lot of the old speculations that a N9-01 device without a keyboard is getting more creedance now.

Question is will it be possible to root the consumer device? I guess not :-(

While folks are saying how stupid it is to show, in an unofficial teaser btw, the keyboard variant of the upcoming MeeGo Harmattan device by Nokia... let me remind you of this.

Keyboard or no keyboard for the final version that's targeted to consumers, remember that this will probably be the last device in that series unless people buy them in bigger numbers than they're expecting.

I'd put aside my hatred for a non-keyboard and would purchase one. I for one will be doing just that. If I can't get a developer one, I'll buy a consumer one and let my money do the talking to Nokia and more importantly... to Elop. MeeGo should have stayed in their future.

don't know why i'm waisting time w/ you, but...
maybe because of this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjvTeDUl3ls
maybe the only purpose of NOKIA to get together w/ m@ke$$h!t was to prevent that LostDOS Paralysed se7en goes down the drain and with it their vision that WIntel could become the dominant platform in the mobile world too.
good, bad?
i have long ago stopped using m@ke$$h!t and switched to Linux / GNU, but what if (what i think could be) NOKIA's vision that both LostDOS and Linux are present in the mobile phone market and can be used interchangeably comes true? buy a LP7 device, connect it to your PC or maybe in a couple yrs download an installer & put MeeGo on it.
as simple as that.

last fall, LP7 was about to go the same way then its ancestors (good riddance, i'd say) but w/ regard having one architecture (x86) from servers to mobile phones (& why not, one OS...) not good.
thus NOKIA decided to help m$.
not to deny that it may help them too; Symbian^3 is not quite as popular any more as it used to be and MeeGo isn't ready for the masses yet (w/ or w/out keyboard >;-)

in case MeeGo goes south (the N9 is a commercial flop) NOKIA gets out of it and goes LostDOS full throttle, which will be made much easier by the fact that they already are the primary LPx partner.

in case MeeGo flies, well, not everybody likes Linux / GNU & Symbian has to be replaced, so why not being on the winning side & benefit from it?
plus companies would be very happy to have one software / CPU platform for all their devices, from (file) server to (business) phone
yeah, working together w/ m$ is no cure, but it has potential

that idea of x86 from server to mobile seems crazy?
rotten iPotatos is currently considering switching to ARM for its laptops CPUs & unify iOS and OS/X (for "portable" devices, @ least)
if Intel achieves the same, a software could be run w/ the same "architecture" from server to mobile... big win.
and could make r. iP. think twice about its move, too

i don't expect you to read all this, leave alone grasp it, but maybe others will be interested...

the original post where i 1st speculated about this...

I don't know why I'm still reading this neverending thread. I have my own opinion about soft and hard keyboards, but that's not the point of this thread, isn't it?

I mean, yes, is something really important, but there are many features that are worth commenting. It's a pity that this is probably the last Maemo/MeeGo device (at least for a while), so if it has a keyboard some will be dissapointed, and if it has not the other way round.

But, come on, it seems that all the apps will be a complete rewrite, and there are almost no comments on that.

To those who had access to the device, or inside knowledge: do you miss features in the core apps? (messaging, calendar, contacts, email, etc.)

Thanks.

PS: IMHO, we don't need 200 more messages about how important the hardware keyboard is for you. I think we all got the point, isn't it? :-)
