pretty much the topic, would love if it this functionality was implemented:

press PB (power button) once, switches orientation
press PB twice, the menu will come (normally after single press)
hold PB, turns off (normal)

the only thing that would be lost is double-press to lock screen, but there's already a dedicated switch for that.

what do you guys think, is it possible?

nice idea, but id prefer:

single press - menu
double press - switches orientation

but I cant live without double press to lock screen.

cant win 'em all.

BUT ultimately what would be best would be global portrait support and proper portrait functionality, being: once in portrait it should not flip to horizontal so easy (like stock apps that support portrait e.g. phone app)

that would be sweeet.

even then, i think a major reason rotation is so touchy on the n900 is because of its multitasking, when you go into to the task switcher, you can see that it has to rotate every single application that's open!

i think i would prefer PB-rotation, over "proper" rotation, as i'm sure it would give the cpu a bit of a break, as it wouldn't have to check when it was being rotated, it could just do what it's meant to do, and leave the orientation to the professionals :P

and how often do you use that menu vs. how often you want it to rotate?
either way it should definitely be user-definable!

I'd love this too - would be nice for reading in bed and lying on my side which the auto rotation does not understand.

Nice idea, but proberbly it would conflict with espeak time.
This app also uses the power button.

I jus posted this on the CSSU thread.

Hi is there any way we can lock the n900 orientation into portrait mode only but if the keyboard is opened it would go into landscape and keyboard closed back into portrait. The current orientation applet has two options either locked landscape or auto orientation if we can have third option as lock in portrait that would be awesome! so please guys is that do able?

I tried working on making a power menu button that would toggle the orientation lock (which isn't exactly the same thing as this, but it's relevant), and never managed to get it to happen without having an x-term launch for a moment.

ANYWAY: power menu is part of systemui, if I remember it right. And systemui is closed source, if I remember that right. So ideally someone would just recode the entire systemui thing, and then we could add more configurable features to the clone.

Alas, that won't be happening any time soon.
