None of the above has changed with any recent announcement.

Our current best bet is to help out the CSSU team and rewrite any closed source packages (they have already made some remarkable progress)

Of course, some packages, like the dsp, may never be re-written; but typically these contain IP from third parties so not a lot Nokia can do..
Others like bme is probably owned completely by Nokia, but they'll never open them for fear of litigation (whether that is a valid argument or not is irrelevant, and it's not going to change because of this poll)

Anyway, best of luck with the poll. But it would help if you actually posted what you plan to do once you get a million signatures or whatever

A better use of time would be to start a Crowdfunder, with the proceeds to go to the CSSU developers.

Good points and thanks for posting the link for everyone to read.
When i last looked at that list there has been some improvements with the hard work by the CSSU team but it still lacks much of the closed packages to really make an impact on progression.

I am sure the BME component could be hacked and re-written as that is a very important part of the os but also makes another issue very clear....
IF Nokia are even to contemplate any release then it would have to be to a developers team that is duty bound in its work and i am sure some arrangement could be struck up between Nokia and the CSSU team we have on this community to enable some kind of future release.

Reverse Engineering has always been a possibility and has probably taken place to an extent but only so much can be done legitimately before it lands the CSSU in hot water.

The situation regarding the N900 is now clear and as we are talking only the hardware of the N900 there has to be a way to negotiation with Nokia to enable Maemo.org to progress Maemo.

What the CSSU team are doing now is more or less guesswork without knowledge of the code needed and can be just as much of a danger to the device during testing, it would do Nokia a lot of good if it were to release what it can to this community than to just ignore this and stop it to further develop Maemo where Nokia has ceased any further development for the N900.

Maemo.org does stand for something and cannot just be ignored by Nokia.

Nokia should publish the code, i dont think they have anything to hide in it and it would help allot of people. I am sure that one powerful enough person in nokia company could do this in one day. Problem is that this action do not lead for them to big income but it would make lets say few thousands people more happy (how many people are using CSSU?:P) and it might lead to us buying next nokia devices with smile on our faces or convince new nokiahater from post microkia era to buy nokia again and that links directly to income for nokia!:P

Nokia, i am convincing you!

The best I can see is they will open components which they said are for competitive advantage, I think access point choosing gui is one among such since there is no competitive advantage since no one else had any maemo device, rest of the components have very low chances of being opened.

I did not want people to realise i set the poll up this way but now you have said, the cat is out of the bag.

Believe it or not Nokia DO look at this forum contrary to what many people say and the reason i urge everyone to leave a comment why they should release the code for the Maemo OS of the N900 to this community.

Now please people think about this as it could well be the move that is needed for this community and the future of our N900.
