When using just Opera I have no problems with running two or three windows plus Skype and a couple more applications (between 2 and 5 in total) at the same time. Never used swap space the whole year (well, 11 months) I've had the N800, and never had an out-of-memory problem.. unless I use MicroB. Of course, it depends a bit on the site I access.
I suppose your definition of usable and mine differ, as do our definitions of everything.
I don't espect a desktop experience either, and I'm rather surprised these devices handle Flash at all.
