I have to disagree with the last point - swap isn't useful unless you need it. The only good reason to have it is as a safety margin for running out of memory situations.

As for MicroB, I really hope for the best. Looking at Firefox (another Mozilla-based browser) I wouldn't be too optimistic, the latest versions suddenly work terribly badly with gmail - it looks like the ajax makes it spinning CPU cycles whenever doing any operation (even scrolling). Can't use it for gmail until they fix that. On the other hand, 'galeon' (another gecko-based browser) is currently fine with gmail. Crossing fingers for MicroB of course - that's what we'll have to use and I know people are working on it.

using swap everything feels faster, give it a try, and don't care about the card life, I'm using swap in the same sd card since January and still works like the first day, and in the case you break it (I've never seen that case because of the use) sd cards are nowadays pretty cheap...

I can notice the improvements of swap memory when browsing, reading big pdfs or having more than 2 apps opened, the N800 has not enough ram...

Flash is part of the Web, whether we like it or not. It's not only a vehicle to deliver adds, but also de-facto standard for delivering video. So dismissing browser performance problems when Flash is embedded (I'm not even talking about playing) by saying "I don't need it - you turn it off" is not a solution. Also, disabling Flash is not exactly one click operation... You seem to not attribute much importance to usability, user experience and other such trifles, but they matter.

And even with Flash disabled MicroB is not fast enough, it occasionally freezes for split seconds while loading pages or scrolling. Don't get me wrong - developers did an admirable job given MicroB's origins in Firefox, which is not known these days for speed and good memory management. But it's not good enough just yet.

I wish I stayed with 2007 untill the official release... I love 2008 and can't wait for its release but I had so much loaded on 2007 that I miss it all, now I am limited...

If you've used swap all the time since January, how would you know if it makes a difference? (I'm just curious - maybe you stop swap now and then?)

The N800 has enough RAM or it wouldn't work (programs would get killed). However, the Linux kernel will use any free memory for disk buffers, that's where the only improvement could come from. But on the other hand it shouldn't push any application data to swap only because it could use RAM as disk cache - disk cache is the lowest priority usage for RAM in the sense that it's the first to get taken if an application needs memory (it won't start pushing other data to swap and leaving disk cache alone). There are some other rare circumstances that could push data to swap. Because of all this I hope you'll understand that I'm somewhat sceptic to claims about improved performance - I'm not saying it isn't true, I simply would like to see some hard numbers..

How is the spectrum of gaming stuff? How much is out for 2008? It looks like Xgmame was ported from the OS2008 Apps thread. Has anyone tried it and is it running well?

I'm mostly interested in ROMS, and NES plus SNES alone will probably satisfy me. Does anyone know if that Playstation emu exists yet for 2008, or if it works well to begin with?

I was waiting anxiously for the final OS2008 release to get the upgrade , but since I am reading about the poor/slow behavior of the microB, maybe I will keep the OS2007 ; hate to trim it to get fast performance.

You are a sad case if it's that funny to you, zerojay.

I see that you already shat in the thread about the PSX emu but had no comment as it developed for 7 more pages.

As for xmame, I assumed that it would be able to handle NES ROM's on the N8**. If I'm wrong, just say so instead of being an ***. The PSX emu seems to be promising even if it's on hold for now, and SNES should be possible, as many others have said.

Edit: It looks like you're wrong anyway, at least about NES, even if the ROMs are hit and miss.

Hmm.. I think I might have meant to respond to someone else, the amazon response was meant for someone who specifically mentioned amazon, but I don't see any mention of it in this thread, aside from mine!

Flash is generally always "playing", whether you see pictures moving around or not. I don't generally see fit to blame the browser for what I see as a Flash problem, be it poorly written applets or an unoptimized/buggy/whatever Flash plugin.

Disabling the Flash component is 3 clicks, if I recall correctly, but I suspect we'll have a proper extension at some point. I tried using some greasemonkey scripts so I could just tap on the Flash of interest, but those unfortunately didn't work so well; I guess greasemonkey loads the entire page first before loading the scripts.

Selectively enabling Flash is my workaround, it may not be a solution for you, if not, then I apologize for my absurd suggestion.

I was merely trying to help.

User experience and usability are very important to me, I just think some have unreasonable expectations.

Was Flash performance really better in Opera? As I've said before, I didn't use Opera for long, but I seem to recall Flash not working nearly as well as it does in microB.
