Doesn't make Windows any less crap. Though there's two OS's going around (on desktops, to say nothing of mobiles): claiming to be Windows. There's DOS, with a strap-on GUI. That's 9x, ME and is complete and total and unmitigated crap.
There's NT, including 5.0 (2k) and 5.1 (XP) (Not sure of Vista's version number, I think it's 6.0RC1? but maybe 5.97.) NT works well enough, and with cygwin, becomes downright usable. I have no strong preference between 5.0 and 5.1, but I don't think I'd like Vista.

Dunno about security, but I have found Linux to be very stable.
Haven't tried windows mobile, CE, pocket PC, or any of the other such things. Last MS based OS on a handheld was DOS on a HP200.
Never used OS/2, though I think I would have liked it. Isn't it pretty, you know, dead these days?
Favorite UNIX, and favorite OS: Slackware Linux; I'm running WinXP/cygwin right now, though, because you do indeed run what you need to run. MathCad... Grrrrrr.
But the N800, or any other handheld to replace it, doesn't have proprietary apps I depend on. That makes it a matter of choice, and I choose something with a usable CLI, because that's the most efficient way to do system-administration and hacking. AFAIK, Windows Mobile has no CLI, and if it does, I'm sure it sucks. And I can't install cygwin to fix that. So, no winmob for me.

Jesus, where do I start. Oh, right. Fanboy-esque posts aren't conductive to conversation... neither is deciding whether Linux based OSes are better than Microsoft's offerings. Comparing XP to a portable Linux OS (Maemo) won't work. Try Ubuntu and let me know what you think. (I'm in Ubuntu right now, don't have to tell me twice, but I digress.)

I don't own an N800, but there are a lot of similarities with what was said about it and the 770. Hate to say it, but I don't think it's the right device for you. I did a lot of research first and set realistic goals for it which it has met and exceeded.

I realized that web sites are extremely heavy these days and test the computing power of even a P4 3.0Ghz with a gig of RAM. I didn't expect a tablet to be seamless, but it's still a decent mobile browsing experience. "Perfect" would be UMPC offerings.

The webcam looks like a sheer gimmick (refer to my ancient pre N800 postings saying that they should've released a bluetooth one and stick to modular hardware or something.) The quality I've seen is choppy and grainy. Blech, could've done better.

Hope you at least had some fun with it. I'm sick and tired of computers, but I found myself more than eager to play with my tablet. Albeit a familiar OS, something about the different form factor made it new and exciting again.

*Edit: And OS/2 was sweet, but I think it's downfall was (as someone mentioned in another thread), emulating Windows programs. Stifled native growth and strangled it prematurely. (It kicked the crap out of Win3.11 and 95 at the time).

Yeah that does look like a sweet device. The Archos 605 WiFi is another device I was looking at getting. I'm gonna have to see if anyone else here has had a look at either of these gems.

Of course, there's the EEE as well...Not the same device, factor etc I know, but still a small computing device that allows web surfing and some other stuff as well

Why do you guys dislike earl so much? He was/is unsatisfied, and he wants better. He posts here to give his opinion (which WILL be reflected by some people who pick up the ITT (like my lingo use? for the rest of us, that means the Nokia Internet Tablet line, the 770 the n800, the n810 and whatever is to come on the 5 step program)) to folks who are thinking about getting one without knowing that it has a not-so-positive side too

I am at the same time bowled over and underwhelmed by the n800 so far. I have an n810 on order (from pcconnection, which had a good price at $411, but has been on order now since Nov 20th, with no update on ship time). As I've said, i think I need to pair it with a phone with unlimited data to get it to live up to my expectations.

It is fine to post both positive and negative impressions of the device, and on a site like this one, where potential buyers (converts?) will come before making the decision, his input is very valuable. I've seen him 'attacked' in numerous threads now. I can buy that this site has tons of info and enthusiasts for potential converts, but i also think it is worthwhile for Earl and other folks who see problems with the platform to post here. (as lots of folks do. I'm not saying that this board is filled with fanboys, quite to the contrary, it is filled with enthusiasts who are willing to share their opinions about what needs to be made better).

It helps all of us be honest and recognize the issues that need to be solved.

So to sum up my thought, Earl is NOT trolling, but he is keeping up with the ITT and letting people know that there is another side to the gadget other than the fan side.

(to post something new, and maybe worthwhile, I showed my n800 to a friend and she (gadget oriented as she is) now wants one for the holidays. I let her borrow it for an afternoon, and when I picked it up (and my kid who was having a playdate) she was more impressed than ever. It is now her xmas gift that she wants from her husband.)

So, in closing, there are folks it works for, and folks it doesn't. Just as we show it to folks with it's good side, it is also good that folks like Earl are here to let people know about it's less than good side. Now if garmin would make a package for the ITT like

There are lots of posts on these forums that discuss problems and issues and complaints about the IT, from software bugs to design decisions. And none of these people get accused of being trolls because they have specific points.

Earl is a troll because since he sold his N800 all he does is whine in generalities, and use inflammatory language. He is not contributing to the knowledge base here. He just wants attention.
