This really is not specific to apple though is it?
It could happen to ANY device be it the iphone, N900 or desktop PC. This sort of mal-ware scam has been around since the late 90s when you could find jpgs with malicious code injected into them. But I suppose the silver lining of this would be to educate users in the dangers of opening unwanted mail.
Let's us all hope that Adobe and other office dev's also hear this and look in to tightening the encryption standards of the PDF format.

Not entirely bad.
It's just a bug in Safari (buffer overfl0w? Who knows? Comex does!).
This is a very OLD bug/problem.
This was how they jailbroke the older iOS's.
It was patched, then a new hole was found.
There was a patch for this problem the day it was released (available via Cydia).
Minkin is correct with the fact that it could happen with any device.
I'm going to guess that Android would be the easiest as it's open and everyone has access to it.

PDFs have been malware carriers for ages. The problem is even worse on Windows with Acrobat Reader, which is probably the worst program you can have on your computer. I got infected TWICE by just going to webpages, without downloading anything, or without any prompt.
