ovi maps is free. however if you download the maps from your phone service provider there may be charges depending on your plan.

you can download the maps on your normal internet using ovi suite and put them on the n900 (that way it will only use the GPS and it will not have to download any map data). However searching and routing has to be done online, so either do that we\here you have free wifi or you can use 3g (but charges may apply for 3g).

As far as i know there isn't any free offline routing software (well.. if there is i don't use it).

You can use Sygic maps (this is a once off payment for the gps app) and supplies offline routing and offline searching. all the maps are on the n900 so there aren't any data cahrges, this will only use the GPS.

The internal GPS may take sometime to pinpoint your location if you choose to not use AGPS (Assisted GPS) mode. AGPS utilises 2.5/3/3.5G/wifi to contact with a SUPL server of your choice in order to get your co-ordinates and using AGPS drastically decreases the amount of time spent on tracking your location and regardless of the weather you are in it will still pinpoint your location fairly quickly compared to just using internal GPS.

As for downloading of the maps to use with the Ovi maps. You do not necessarily need Ovi suite to download the maps, there are alternative ways but it all depends on how capable you are.

You do not need internet connection to see where you are provided that:
1) You are outside on a preferrably clear sky
2) You have the country map (or maps) already loaded into your device, obviously whichever country you are in, you already have the map loaded for that country.
