What should you do: http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware
Can you backup the phone?: Its a little too late to use the normal methods. If you insist, there is a thread floating around somewhere on talk.maemo.org with one installing backupmenu when the device is semi-bricked. If you don't have backupmenu installed, it'll be challenging. If you do, its as simple as going into backupmenu to dump the rootfs contents into eMMC/microSD/etc.

Always backup on SD or copy your backup on you're computer!

I prefere use Linux to fo the flash...

One time, I had a shutdown when flashing but after reflash, my N900 keep alive!
It's very easy to flash this monster!

Fahd.

Try restarting your phone after taking out the battery first and putting it back in. See if that helps. If it doesn't, there are known problems with win7 64 bit machines. If that applies to you, your best bet is to either use try the workarounds found here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_t...nd_Workarounds

Other options: find a 32bit machine, or download (this would be your better choice) a LiveCD of any linux distribution (although Ubuntu is probably the easiest one) and start flashing from there.

theres a problem with windows 7. you need to apply the libusb fix. its in the link provided above. or use a linux live cd or windows xp to flash your phone, and you might only need to flash the kernel. meaning your files are still intact.

fahd, no results in google? it's called a reboot loop, or that is the phrase most people use to describe this problem. Lots of hits on google using "reboot loop maemo". (Admitted: Finding stuff with google very much depends on how well you are able to describe what you want.)

Difficult, you ask? No, it's not hard at all. It's mainly a matter of being precise when you're doing it, so follow the wiki/tutorials around to the letter. And of course, the first time it's a bit scary perhaps, but the second time already less, etc.

For the rest: What m4r0v3r said.

I had similar situation sometimes ago and only thing that worked was full reflash (rootfs + eMMC). Rootfs reflashing didn't help for me.

Try rootfs first anyway, it might work.
Updating the firmware
