The current marketing from all the heavy hitters and techblogs is that more cores=better phones, no ifs or buts. The pre3 was heavily criticized for having a punny 1.4ghz single core CPU!

I believe that the ability of the N9 to run code without the java runtime and its 1gb of ram more than offsets the one-core CPU. But if you say that to a non-savvy buyer it will sound like you're making excuses, as not a lot even know what "ram" is, let alone the difference between Qt and Java running on a VM. It's the reason car automakers can sell crap cars with hillariously overpowered engines that the chassis can't possibly utilize. From my experience, casual consumers latch on a single spec, and the bigger it is the better.
very much agreed giorgo, it should be priced accordingly.

i am a maemo fan, but i am also a it hardware geek and every time i look at a £500 pricetag on a N9 i snicker; who do nokia think they are trying to kid!

it should be no more than £350 sim-free, the LG Optimus Black P970 i have just acquired as a free upgrade on a £10/month contract is a very good comparison.

android 2.2 (upgrade to 2.3)
4" screen with 700nit brightness and gorilla glass
1GHz Omap3 SoC
Slim candybar with excellent build quality

what are nokia doing wrong that they reckon they need to charge 50% more for the same basic design?

If you look at Telias top 9 sold units, N9 is number 4. pretty good for an unreleased product from Nokia with an OS that arent their primary and never will be...

It also looks like Nokia Demark is promoting it very well with some info-meetings held with a carrier (3) along with their website and facebook page.
I'm attending one of those N9 events next thursday, so if anyone's got some questions, i'll be more than happy to ask them, or try to figure them out myself...

No matter what, i'll look into the VKB, and the overall feel and responsiveness of the UI... and of course it'll all be IMHO, but i'll try to explain my views ... but as mentioned.. questions are welcome

  • ask about bluetooth (is it 4.0 or not!?).
  • ask about email provisioning (does it exist or not!?).
  • ask about radio transmitter and receiver.
  • ask whether the white N9 exists or if its just a case.
  • ask about warranty support for people that buy the phone in countries where it's not sold.
  • ask about a release date.
  • ask about which accessories will be available at launch.
  • ask about how they plan to handle battery replacement (and general repair issues)
  • ask about how 3rd party apps will be delivered (e.g. via ovi or some other repository)
  • ask them why the El Gamal 15 clue on N9 Seconds was wrong and they didn't fix it.

tri band, LCD, 2Go storage, 512Mb ram, 5MP (and that's not even the optics), build by LG.
That maybe doesn't amount to a 150€ difference, but it doesn't come free either

@jedibeefrix:it's the traditional Nokia tax, unfortunately. The N8 is still quite an expensive device, considering it's thoroughly outclassed by even mid-level androids in the user experience (I know, belle is coming, but still it sold for a year with a vanilla symbian) and hardware, relying solely on its camera. The N900 sold for 500 euros in Greece during October/ December 2011, even though it was a year old and a bomb regarding sales.

I'm afraid that I will simply burst into laughter when I hear the unsubsidized price of the N9. I fully expect, as you said, a 50% premium compared to similarly spec'd phones, and maybe reaching the eye-watering heights of the iphone. If that's the case, I'll wait, and if my N900 breaks I'll probably make do with something like the new xperia mini pro that retails for something like 230 euros. I like FOSS and try to support it whenever possible, but I don't have that high a disposable income.

I have just asked nokiadenmark on twitter, whether cyan comes to Denmark and hope you could ask them too?

Man if the N9 comes here for more than 550 euros I probably wont get it. I'm hoping for something around 500 though

EDIT: Wow, I wish I had something to say about the N9 these days other than sarcastic grief. But I don't.

Because I know Nokia's put far more expenditure into the software than any Android OEM.
Plus the overall hardware design (when everything's factored-in) is still pretty impressive.
It remains to be seen how much exactly that "premium" is.
If it's hugely more expensive, then I'll probably give it a miss too.

It's just too early & there's still too many unknowns to claim it's not a good phone.
It's quite probable it won't be as good value as many.
But price aside, where it stands overall is still impossible to determine.

But if it's not buyable until well after Sep30 then I'm done, good-bye Nokia forever.

Find out WTF's happening to flash, & the front-facing camera too if you can!
For vid-chat, is there going to be a XMPP/Jingle* or Skype client, or both or what!?

*maybe even MUJI? (wishful thinking)
