try this, remove the battery for a bit press power button whilst battery removed then restart.

root
apt-get install --reinstall speedpatch
.....
root
apt-get autoclean
apt-get autoremove

This didn't helped but thanks
I now get an error when trying to install speedpatch via xterm.
/home/user # apt-get install --reinstall speedpatch
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package speedpatch is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package speedpatch has no installation candidate
I think I got an empty leafpad file. Probably because I uninstalled speedpatch.

I would suggest:
root
apt-get install --reinstall speedpatch
reboot x 2
then:
root
fapman
and uninstall via fapman.
Following that you might want to think about doing
root
apt-get autoclean
apt-get autoremove
