The "No SIM" icon in the status bar is very irritating for me, especially since I use the phone exclusively via WiFi.

The two relevant areas are:
  1. /etc/hildon-desktop/status-menu.plugins
  2. /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu

All commands as root:

Code:
sudo gainroot

First, move the cellular plugin into 'disabled'

Code:
mv /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/connui-cellular.desktop /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/disabled/connui-cellular.desktop

Now disable the entry

Code:
leafpad /etc/hildon-desktop/status-menu.plugins
disable the following lines by putting a semicolon in front of them:
Code:
;[connui-cellular.desktop]
;X-Desktop-File=/usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/connui-cellular.desktop
;X-Status-Area-Permanent-Item=Special-Item-0
you can now reboot.

The battery icon is messed up, and I'm not sure how to fix it, but at least it's one step closer to the 'no "No SIM" icon' idea working out.

I hate to spoil the beans but there's a slightly more easier way by using the powatool.

Though removing the No SIM icon still leaves an ugly grey gap in between the clock and the battery charge indicator.

Powatool is exactly what I was looking for! It's perfect, and leaves no gap in my setup.
