I sometimes do access my email at gmail using the Nokia 770 with same OS. Indeed there are no specific checkboxes next to individual emails so as to allow one to select them and delete multiple emails at once.

To delete multiple emails at once, I usually drag my stylus over all the emails ( selecting them in the process, as they are seen to get highlighted in gray color ) that I need to delete and then hit the recycle bin shown on the bottom Task-bar.

At this point, a pop up Box will ask whether one wants to delete the files from Nokia 770 and the Server or from the Nokia 770 only. Here we can choose as to what we want the Nokia 770 to do.

I think the OP is referring to accessing his email using the gmail web interface via his browser and you're referring to using the built-in email client (configured to your gmail account obviously).

Perhaps you are right ' Fionn '.

Anyway, in order to see if I was wrong, I did it as mentioned in your post here.

I have a bookmark, that I have named ' Gmail '. It points to www.gmail.com.

This bookmark is totally separate from the email retrieval options that appears when I click on the two, half human figures ( one green and the other orange ).

I went online using the bookmark I mentioned above ( I believe that this would be using the Nokia browser ) clicked on it and signed on to my gmail account.

On checking my email, I was able to see a small box next ( left) to each of the email. I was able to select and unselect them at will. I was able to delete one email ( just as a test).

So, this should mean that, I can manipulate emails in two different ways mentioned.

Is it a possibility that you have some setting on your Nokia 770 that you need to manipulate ?

A few minutes ago I went online using the Nokia770. I opened a new browser window. I typed ' m.gmail.com ', and signed on to mobile gmail using my regular gmail credentials.

I had three new emails and they had a box on the left which allowed me to select all three of them. I scrolled to the bottom and hit the ' delete ' button. I was able to delete all the three emails.

Thanks

If I use http://m.gmail.com I'm directed to the site shown in the screenshots I posted above.

Why not just enable javascript in your browser settings and use the full http://www.gmail.com or http://www.googlemail.com service?
