As we all know, we cannot disable the N9 camera sound in option directly due to some legal reasons of different countries.

Changing the profile to silent mode still doesn't work.

One way is to plug in an headphone, the sound will go to the headphone and people around will not notice it. But it is a bit too complicated.

Of course, you also can use some 3rd party apps that support mute mode, such as Camera Pro, but I still think the original camera app is good enough.

So I checked the 4 sounds related to the camera/video recording :

They are all wav format files with stereo output.
The shortest one lasts 0.131s and the longest one lasts 0.320s.

Then it become easy, you can use some acoustics editing software to create a blank wav format file and replace the original ones :

Tested and it works perfect.

unless I am missing something putting my n9 on silent makes it so that there is no shutter sound. Been like this for a while

Yes, tested it on silent and no shutter sound. This is an even easier way and you still keep the option. Nice. You're a genius!

It is strange then ...

In China here, the camera sound remains even in silent mode...

PS. the N9 is shipped with PR1.1 here.

Maybe in some countries silent mode is not allowed for legal reasons but I wouldn't expect China to fall in this category.

Different regional firmwares are set differently in this regard, and have been for a long time. People were complaining about not being able to turn off the shutter sound back in the days of the N73, but I never had a problem turning it off just by setting my Scandinavian firmware to silent. I guess Scandinavians aren't known for putting cameras up womens' skirts to the extent that such a firmware limitation would be warranted.

Do you have to reboot after removing the wav files?

Thank you all for the info, however, could someone perhaps take me back a step from:

"Also, the obvious removal of the snd_camera_shutter.wav file from inside /usr/share/sounds/ui-tones will stop the shutter sound from going off. "

I am not a phone hacker/developer or anything, just a regular user who wanted to try a different kind of phone. I know on my Symbian N8 I could find things going thru File but I cannot find that on an N9 & connecting to my computer and searching is a no go either.

Just downloaded File Manager & that did not make this easy to find either.

CameraPro only mutes still pictures & I would like to mute in video as well.

Thank you!!

More interested in 'no red led while recording a video'
Camera shutter sound can be turned off by using tweak 'U-2' in n9qtweak
