I remember when the N9 was announced earlier and people were talking about a possible serious lack of apps you would've thought it would have only 5 apps on the phone!! This phone is 2 months old on a new OS. I repeat new OS. Give it time buddy. The community is small but they did more with the N900 than apple or android have done giving their resources in a similar amount of time. Give it a month or two and if you still feel EXACTLY the same way I will be the one to help you type another essay lol
Very well said. I remember when I got N900, there are, if I remember it correctly, less than 10 apps in the store. Now, there are too many. My N900 was stolen two weeks ago, so I got N9 as a replacement. N900 is handsdown a very intuitive pc/phone. Loved that phone. Though N9 still got rough edges, such as a dropping wifi signal, no arrow keys - tapping to the first letter of a message is impossible, cannot remove browser history..., my hope is still high that N9 will be much better and be able to solve most flaws next month or so. FYI. my N9 wallpaper is Olivia Munn in a beach. =) http://iamchiq.fooyoh.com/iamchiq_celeb_gossip/6504221

Using the app screen as a task switcher would be terrible idea in my opinion.
Yep, the task switcher should remain a central part of the UI. Although the OS should have a setting such that it closes apps by itself (i.e. those who are idle) if there are too many open to make life easier for "normal" users. And a better screen resolution would be nice too, so that the mini-views look better and are readable.

more control (active apps list can be reached from every screen by clicking status, instead of having to swipe to the task switcher screen first).
clicking status is much more annoying. I must say swiping is so effective and easy, especially one handed. Swipe the app away, then if you're not in the task screen just do another (small) swipe. Its effortless and easy to get to the screen you like, without bending your thumb to reach the button at the bottom.

Swipe manager does not improve usability at all IMO.

This is a bit of a frankenstein mix on the N9 while the N900 offers system wide consistency and coherence.
The N9 has more UI elements, e.g. sometimes its the back button and sometimes cancel/save, then there are tabs etc. All of them have a purpose though and are used wisely throughout the OS. With the exception of the maps app which I find super annoying.

Topic poster: Reading your post is like reading a love letter. Long story. Boring. Makes people sleep and gives the Sandman a run for his money.

i beg to ask this question

how many of the people commenting in this thread actually own a n9?
if you dont own one what do you currently own ?

i own a n900 and n9. currently in my possession are htc desire, iphone4, samsung galaxy s2. very soon to be in my possession a nokia lumia 800 which will be interesting.

seriously, if you dont own a n9 then you shouldnt be commenting.

and i love how in this entire thread that only a handful of people have stood up to validate my words as truth. the rest are 'its too long to read' and tangent to 'but the n9 looks pretty and swipe is fun'. while these are both truths in themselves... no-one has said that the original post(s) were misleading or not true in any way.

I have N9, N900 and HTC Desire Z. Last one is used mainly for following Android field for what is going on there. I also work with all types of phones in my line of work. My general view is that all of them are flawed.

Swiping is not about fun, it is about usefulness and usability in everyday use.

I do agree with most of your points. I absolutely disagree with your general tone that life would be better with other brands. One can type long rant on any phone's shortcomings, it is just what you want to bring into attention. Instead I want to give credit for a phone that brings something really different yet still working on the table.

Because it would depend on individual use, which is subjective. We did in-directly point out on the 'misleading' by saying -'BUT........I actually find this function easier',etc, etc. Or 'Some Android/Iphone users prefer N9 after they took the plunge & purchased the N9'(In the Msian N9 forum)

If I follow the 'Shipping' & similar threads correctly, except for 1 person, the rest actually do own N9. I also currently have the E6 which I use together with N9 - still prefer physical keyboard for faster one handed typing, had Samsung Bada & Galaxy Ace before.

I dont like the Iphone for reasons like overdependance on ITunes, ICloud, limits in bluetooth, glass back cover. But millions of people buy, use & like it.....subjective.

I have the N9, a Desire amoled and a Sensation.

I do agree with most of the points brought up in the opening post(s). The way the whole thing was written did make it a drag to read, i managed but probably missed a thing or two.

My main gripe with swipe is when using it single handed: about 1/3 of the time a swipe-down misfires and either does nothing or opens the status, that's annoying.

I do find the home screen handy, i use it to show my agendas (organiserfeed functionality should be standard), check my feeds and incoming messages. I don't think i'd want this stuff integrated with the task switcher screen since running apps and incoming communications are two different things. It does need some more customizability. Having said that, i haven't used the N900, so i would be interested to see how this was set up there for comparison.

Gecko browser is not a viable alternative in terms of performance, some extra features in the webkit browser is preferrable imo (mainly text reflow, location bar autohide, password save and tabbing/multiwindow).

all you N9 die hards are the same, missed the point by a mile.
N900 = 2 years old plus
N9 = brand new top dollar device and it doesnt do the basics.

go read the Lumia 800 review on this same very message board and read about all the new features that were in the n900 2 years ago, and NOT the n9.

anyone want to buy a slightly used mint condition N9 64gb black ?

In the same way, you have also missed our point - everyone already knew the disadvantages of n9. Yet we bought it anyway, some like it,some less.
It called doing research before buying. As far as I'm concerned, n9 does the basics just fine.

Lumia 800 has 1 major disadvantage, over dependance on zune/cloud storage(i.e. $$$ for data rates),that alone deters me from even considering it. As for n900, no other phone thus far is even on par with it BUT I would not gotten it due to it being a slider phone, too bulky.
