My partner has just bought the 770 with the sat nav & have only had item a few days, we were using it last night for about 30mins & my partner went to charge it & now when we switch it on the screen is blank. After reading the reviews on amazon where he bought it from, it seems this has happened to another user. The screen lights up when you switch it on, but the nokia logo does not appear & then there are just some lines running down the screen. Can anyone help as it look like we will have to return it to amazon as defective. Many thanks.

WSOD.

It's an inherent problem with most, if not all 770.

It's a hardware fault, so you can't fix it yourself. Get a replacement from Amazon or repair at Nokia.

Ugh...its a bummer this defect is still rearing its ugly head. Yup it is definitely the WSoD and the unit is now DOA, do a search if you want to learn more.

I do not think this issue is an " inherent issue ".

Just like ' Hedge ' here , I too have had the Nokia 770 for a long time now and it is still working like when I bought it ( back in 2005 Dec.)

I can positively say that I have dropped it a few times, accidently smashed onto the screen a few times ( when it slipped out of my hands and grabbing it quick to save it from falling onto the floor ).

I have installed and un-installed all sort of software ( FM radio on Nokia 770 anyone ? ) that I know may not work on it. No issues of any kind has been noticed so far. My Nokia 770 too is made in Estonia.

Probably the units sold at Amazon and wherever else are from the old original batch of defective Nokia 770.

It seems like some 770s produced in 2006 had the WSOD problem. The early ones from 2005 and those from late 2006 work fine. I bought my 770 in Oct 2005 and didn't experience such a problem, although I flashed and rebootet it a lot.

On defective units, the WSOD can happen when rebooting due to (if I understood correctly) some race condition in powering the components.

Yep as others have said it's the White Screen of Death. This happened to my 770 three weeks ago. Rather unfortunate, but I did get a replacement under warranty from Nokia in under three weeks so it's not a total loss. The only unfortunate thing is I'm leery that the WSoD may show up on my replacement.

Anyway, if the 770 is still under warranty, (http://www.nokiausa.com/A4410053) send it off to Nokia and you'll get a replacement. Aside from replacing the LCD yourself, there's nothing you can do to repair it. Hope that helps.

My n770 is dead also, white screen as others said. I didn't drop it or do any unusually movement. I just turned it off and then on, then I got a white screen with some lines and no logo. Maybe I turned it off and on too quickly, so beware about doing that. I just used it for 3 months. I am sending it back to Nokia tomorrow.
