I've been doing a bit more tweaking than is healthy and I have screwed up my system. Could some one do this for me? (PLEASE!!!)

I need to know what hidden files are in /root, if any.
could you from xterm as 'root':
>cd /root
>ls -a

And tell me what you find. Is there a .bashrc file?
If so, could you email it to me at bruce@infomage.com?

(Or reply and copy its contents in your message.)

contents of /root/.bashrc

export PS1='\h:\w\$ '
umask 022

the rest of the lines are commented out, so you can get yourself going with that, while someone emails you the entire file.
