And even if they go on and do that they simply can't afford it. The sad truth is that Nokia signed it's death sentence on Feb 2011 and now its just waiting for the execution.
Your words made me cry. Unfortunately I expect the same. It is sad to see that big companies and innovative products like Maemo/MeeGo and webOS could be easily eliminated by a few stupid people who are failing to believe in the product they created. I mean honestly, why should I buy a N9 (please no flamewar now - just stated it for sake of argumentation) or a HP Pre if I already know, that these products are gonna be pretty likely dumped into the trash can by their former creators.
For me the perfect combinations still would be a Nokia Phone with webOS (open webOS if it's ever to come).
Nokias dedication to former flagships can be seen in the way the customer support deals with n900 users. The very first time I called them, they never heard of this phone, now that my phone is broken Nokia wants me to buy a new Nokia phone and denies that the usb to old nokia charger adapter ever existed, eventhough this came with the phone.

For me these are all signs, that the same thing which officially (!) happened to Maemo are gonna happen to MeeGo. It's just sad to see, that Nokia lacks in dedication and faith in its own products.

My two cents,
blck

P.S. Why the hell is Nokia using valuable resources to develop yet another linux based os, if they already have MeeGo. You build highend phones with WP7? Fine use MeeGo then for future phones and see what the community can create damn it!

There is no Plan B because if Plan A fails Nokia will be laid to rest in a WP7 grave with a grinning Microsoft to mourn it. Elop has put all of Nokia's eggs in one basket. How many quarters will it take for Nokia to to revive Symbian, produce Androids or dust off MeeGo? The smartphone industry isn't going to wait and Nokia will be bleeding to death. Repeat. There is no Plan B. Nokia will live or die with WP7.

I suppose switching to Android would be quickly done. Nokia is testing their devices with Android, even if just for fun.

I don't think MeeGo (or Harmattan for that matter) will completely die within Nokia. Seeing that we still get updates (PR1.3 is somewhat confirmed) and I think it won't exactly stop there.

I presume at least one special person within Nokia will keep it running somehow and that is Marko Ahtisaari himself. If you look at his Twitter timeline you can see that in the recent weeks many of his tweets still came from his N9 and I don't think it only was to try out PR1.2.

I think he is the one who keeps the Harmattan efforts alive as he is important enough for Nokia to not shut down his personal baby.

Yes, eye-candy-wise looks ok. Also happy to see it already runs on some kind of phone-like device according the video.

Huawei joining Tizen-alliance is a great thing. I would think China wouldn't accept any full-USA made closed source OS with possible backdoors but rather would like Tizen with Huawei and security which they can themselves verify and audit. Would think there is lots of countries, institutes and companies in the world which will appreciate full open source mobile OS and phones.

This is probably as good as a thread as any for this...

Are Maemo versions increasing, internally? I say that because while on the Fremantle, most Nokia packages had the a +0m5 on the version, which I assume is for Maemo 5. (eg osso-xterm 0.14.mh30+0m5) (Diablo and previously weren't branded as Maemo, and therefore had only standard numbers-only versions.)

Harmattan PR1.0 had packages with mostly +0m6 on the version, for Maemo 6, but on PR1.2 plenty got updated to m7 (eg: mce 1.11.20+0m7) and there are even some m8 ones (apnews 1.0.13+0m8, wxapp 1.0.17+0m8)

So pointless speculation time: does that mean the maemo team went chrome versioning for this last stretch before it dies? Or are they sick of it all not even caring about versions anymore?

Version numbers are serious business!
