Of those mentioned. OpenChess is completely free. Hiarcs is probably the best commercial Palm chess game. Miniature was a big disappointment. Eboard is not that good for viewing games.

All in all, Nokia is still an astonishingly poor environment for chess players. It someone was going to make an actually good chess game for the N900, they should either start with Scid (for its many useful functions) or Miniature (for its beauty and mostly unrealized potential).

Just to let you know where I am now regarding chess on the N900.

I installed the new Nitdroid Vostok mostly to get the chess.com app and also the freechess app to play my online games. Both are excellent, as is the shredder chess app. Obviously there was the chance of missing calls whilst playing so to get round this I divert calls in maemo to my other mobile (SE T68i) and then boot nitdroid, when a call comes in, just reject it and the other mobile rings.
Still use GarnetVM though for games against comp when I fancy just a quick game.

@Geneven, I completely agree, I had such high hopes for minature but I think it's abandoned now and whilst Eboard works it's a bit too fiddly...

This is one of my favorite sites.

http://m.gameknot.com/

But it has serious problems.

Using Tear, when I choose a chess puzzle, the cookies don't keep so it has me as a Guest, and I can't save any of my chess pieces or board color settings either.

With Microb, it's not too bad since my settings do get saved.

However, I have to click two squares to the left of a chess piece, which makes the first two columns on the board unselectable.

As for Opera, it was just a hot mess.

Is there anything at all that I can do to make this site run correctly on my Maemo 4 tablet?

Also, to add on this thread, Tascbase is a really nice chess engine that can run under Dosbox.

Cheers.

Well, I played my first game on that website I posted above.

It's actually works fairly good. There's still not a perfect browser I have found for it though.

I thought I was pretty awesome by getting a checkmate, down a queen, and only taking a couple of pawns.

I love to bum rush one side of the board. *lol*

Anyway, after it was over, it will point out all of the innumerable mistakes you've made for deeper study.

Apparently I made plenty of them. *lol*

The D-Pad works perfectly to review the game, plus it will also show the best moves at points of error.

Additionally, it has plenty of statistics to review as well, including your opponent.

It has about 58,000 chess puzzles and also chess tactics too.

You should check it out.

I know it's a paying site, but what it offers, there's not much reason to subscribe for this unless you're a chess die hard.

Anyway, I was bored just now and wanted to share more of this with you guys.

I just found my new favorite web site.

http://chesstempo.com/

It's another one that while registration is free, it also offers a paid membership though I don't see much of a reason for this just yet.

I'm completely addicted to the Chess Tactics puzzles. I played these for hours yesterday with joy while watching my chess rating climb and fall.

Loads of options... I actually prefer the board much bigger, pic not shown of this.

It only works in Microb and also make sure to have your preferences set to click then click.

Drag and drop doesn't work well at all.

Anyway, if anyone signs up for either one of these sites, set us up with a match.

I'll get an instant notification through email.

My username is Steffenfield at both places.

Kind regards.

Has anyone signed up over at chesstempo yet?

The tactic puzzles are all brilliantly well done.

So far, this is my current record.

Correct: 128 Incorrect: 101

Needless to say, I stink at them.
