Also worth a look is the Amadis Video Converter (it isn't free) see
http://www.amadis-soft.com/video_converter.htm

You will still need to RIP, but it has the advantage of producing a video output that can be used directly on the Nokia N8xx - I set to 352 x 240 and export as AVI. no need to reconvert from MP4.

I have ripped quite a few DVD's to MP4 format so I could play on my PSP ... will these work on the N800 'as is' or do they need some more converting?

I'd personally recommend tablet-encode:

I hv downloaded the handbrake and install in my pc. I converted the "TS_Video" into a mp4 file. However, the final mp4 file cannot be understood by any player. Does anyone know why? Also, an 1hr movie took me more than 1hr for conversion. It seems that the program is very slow, isn't it? My PC is Duo Core 2.0 with 2GB Ram already

I think there have already been a dozen or so threads on this, I even wrote an article on it with instructions
