You can use the Calender to make Birthdays, When you open the new appointment screen, it only shows some of the fields, just press the down arrow button that appears under Location, it will expand to more fields, Where you can change the Calender from Personal to Birthdays.
FYI you get two Calenders, Personal and Birthdays, but you can create as many Calenders as you want and change which ones are currently displayed by the menu item Manage Calenders.
