Wanted to check with the people that use the 770, do you want to upgrade to the 800/810?

I can get one for a good price and wanted to know. Will you be able to upgrade to OS2008 when released, and finally, can root access be gained on the 800/810?

I currently use my 770 (with HE2007).
It's my primary "couch" companion - browsing,mail (imap via claws mail) and vnc control to server/HTPC when needed.
I'm very tempted by the n810. If I get it I would broaden out the use to include it as travelling companion, meeting companion and media player. This is of course possible with the 770 allready - but it is too unstable to use for work.

The only thing holding me back is the "old fashioned" charging. I recently bought the Nokia 6500 classic phone, and love the micro usb port for everything.
Why the heck didn't they implement this with the n810 and keep the minijack (i just hate having 5 different chargers around the house).

I what you are saying about the chargers! it gets me. My primary phone now is the Nokia e90 and its got the USB port to connect to your Mac or Pc but it still needs to be charged with a separate adapter! go figure.

That is some good advice, I can get the N800 for about $100 more than the 770 which is $330 aussie.
So from what I am reading the 800 would be a better move!
But would it be so... for the lack of a better word... be so hackable?

Officially the 770 only supports OS2006. Unofficially, developers have ported OS2007 to the 770 (OS2007HE). It does not support OS2008, nor are there any plans to officially support it. Developers may eventually port OS2008 to the 770, but don't expect it anytime soon.

Root access may be obtained on any of the Nokia Internet Tablets. The easiest way is to install the utility "BecomeRoot".

I am tempted for the 770 as I like the black... but guess if you spend the money go for the better one!

The 770 is great, and I still use mine in addition to my N810, but I would recommend the N800 or N810. The 770 seems a little underpowered compared to the newer models, doesn't support Flash9 (no YouTube), and most developers have turned their attention to the newer ones so the existing pool of programs isn't likely to grow much anymore. I skipped out on the N800 because I don't have the money to be buying every new version that comes out, but when the N810 came out I decided it was finally time to upgrade from the 770. However, if you're new to tablets the N800 is probably your best bet. You can easily get one for under $200, and with OS2008 the processor gets a speed boost to match the N810. It just depends on what you plan to use it for. The N800 is clearly superior for multimedia due to the dual full-size SD card slots, but if you intend to use the GPS a lot or do a lot of typing (long emails or hours on end of chat) the N810 might be your best choice.

Can you send me a link to where you can easily get it for under $200 besides on eBay used? The cheapest I can find it new is on amazon for $231 with free shipping.

I figure that the 770 will last me another year or so (barring another screen failure, that is ). Competition on MIDs is starting to heat up, so I figure that by that time, I'll have plenty of choices besides the N800 (without discounting the possibility that Nokia's successor will yet beat them all!)

I recently got a N810 after having a 770 for two years. I did not move to N800 because it was too soon for a replacement and I had concerns about it being durable and pocket friendly. I love the hard case and general ruggedness of the 770.

I've had the N810 about 3 weeks and like it overall and will not be going back to the 770. The faster CPU and improved OS are great. I did not like the idea of the thumb board but actually use it quite a bit in terminal, maemopad, etc. I have played with the GPS and webcam and can see the potential for incorporating them. The light sensor and LED is nice. The softcase works well in conjunction with the screen lock for carrying in your pocket and provides decent protection. But this is not a rugged device.

I am a bit disappointed with the browser. It's great that it handles Flash but Opera on OS2006 does a better job of navigating web pages, i.e. fit width to screen, panning, and zooming.

Overall I am impressed with the N810 as a hardware device but feel like 0S2008 is half finished in terms of overall presentation and consumer friendliness. Of course the software will continue to evolve.

Circuit City had it for a while for $200 but that sale appears to be over. You really just have to look around and catch a sale at the right time. Check the forums regularly....people will usually post if they find a really good deal somewhere.
