Sorry guys if this is not the correct forum, please move around if needed.

Don't know if someone noticed that there is a clone of Hildon Desktop in http://maemo.gitorious.org under the name of ibinde-hildon-desktop, created by Moises Martinez. I noticed that changes in it are quite extensive including no dependencies on hildon, resolution independent and resizability of desktop widgets. Then after quick search revealed several videos that are quite intriguing:

I tried building hildon-desktop (cordia) on my pc (x86) and it did build (after a lot of quirks though), I don't think things will be much different on the n900.

I pulled all sources under cordia, and built them.

all build dependencies are either already available in ubuntu repositories or are under cordia tree on launchpad.

problems were encountered mostly when building the modified gtk, and when building cordia itself during compilation and linking, other packages had problems with deprecated functions, and warnings being treated as errors.

all installations were done in a separate prefix /usr/local/ which is the default anyway, as replacing gtk or glib in ubuntu can damage the whole system.

I tried installing cordia only to the main system directory, and then logged out, logged in from tty1, stopped lightdm, and did startx hildon-desktop from tty1, the screen flashed for a second and xserver terminated by itself with no errors, I don't think this is the correct way to try starting it.

does anybody how to start it correctly ?

thanks !

I have not be able to start the fremantle hildon-desktop on another system. However, I managed to start hildon desktop through scratchbox on ubuntu, and run some ubuntu apps under it. I did that by using scratchbox's af-sb-init script which does some magic with environment variables and wrappers.

Now there are a few things you might want to look into:
  1. this ubuntu ppa with cordia. It is supposed to work on oneiric but maybe there are relevant scripts on how to run h-d: https://launchpad.net/~cordia-team/+archive/daily
  2. my modified af-sb-init script which I tried to use on harmattan to launch hildon-desktop from a fremantle chroot, unsuccessfully, I am posting it though because it may contain valuable information, and because there are some effects after running it http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...8&d=1340225346
  3. the run-standalone.sh script on your N900: Hildon desktop needs some environment variables to run and that script sets them up. It is located at /usr/bin IIRC
  4. older ubuntu releases had the diablo hildon-desktop in their repositories, and gave you the option to start a hildon session at the login screen. If the startup system is still the same on fremantle, you could inspect those .debs and see what they installed: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/hildon-desktop

Define "this". Ubuntu? Or You're just adding such a note to any random thread, without checking what it is about?

I'd say h-d.
Either way IIRC both have been covered on other threads.
