I am also learning that the apps that come with the Nokia are more than adequate. And there is a kinda First Tier of apps that people like and use: the GPE Suite, Erminig, Maemopad+ (note program), Gnumeric (spreadsheet), the Camera app, FM radio,... they all look pretty polished to me and have worked pretty well - installing and running - in my experience.

Don't have Orb, didn't copy the file over, just streamed the music file from my laptop and then, because my wife wasn't impressed, a file from her laptop to the N800.

The File Manager saw the shared folders on the home network from my computer, and when I double clicked it opened Media player, buffered for a few seconds, and then played with no problem.

Yes, you can just stream them as well.

The nice thing about Orb, is that it will transcode video files on-the-fly to match whatever bandwidth you have available. You can also access your orb media remotely via the internet, wherever you can get a connection with adequate bandwidth.

Again, I wasn't aware that there was any way to see network shared drives. Orb makes my drives uPnP so it's visible on the network, and it's an easy way out for me since I can't be bothered to dig around Linux

No idea, but it does. Both SD cards show up as 'Removable Drives'. Like I said, it just works, and I don't care how

Also, the n810 has a micro SDHC slot, not a full-sized SDHC.
Correct, but at this point in time, it still requires some digging around with the commandline, and I've already reflashed my N800 thrice this week from just playing around with the Instant Messaging Upgrades before coming to the conclusion that it does not suit my needs at this point in time (for some reason, MSN (Haze) does not appear as an option when I try to Add Details, and I have more MSN contacts than I have Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, etc).

Also, as per my post in another thread, I get a lot of my contacts with @hotmail.com when I add my Yahoo account. No idea why, and again, but I'll wait till this gets sorted out. I don't really need the rest of the protocols -- the built-in support for GoogleTalk and Gizmo/SIP works perfectly for me, and I would only like to add MSN and Yahoo instead of the rest of the protocols which I do not need.

Plus, A2DP isn't the dealbreaker for me now. If anything, i would love to get MSN working properly on the Instant Messaging Upgrades (which I understand is in beta, so I've got nothing to complain about).

@ghoonk - Didn't they say that they'd be enabling more protocols with rtcomm?

From http://rtcomm.garage.maemo.org :
To see the list of services/protocols supported by pidgin, visit: http://www.pidgin.im/. Please note that not all protocols are enabled for now, but they can be added later on.
So, your MSN, Yahoo, etc. could be coming along, perhaps with the final release (pure speculation). You might also want to request those protocols from the developers, as they might be more inclined to enable them if they hear from people who want those features.

I've had no problems with Yahoo, AIM or MSN. They all worked fine for me. It takes some time to download all the contacts sometimes, but once it settles in it just works.

It's not the contacts download that's not working for me. Here's a summary of the problems I'd had:

Installed RTComm Beta
Set up GoogleTalk in Account Settings. Contacts showed up fine.
Set up SIP (with my Gizmo settings) in Account Settings. No Gizmo contacts show up. That's fine with me.
Set up MSN Messenger. Nothing shows up.
Left it for half an hour. Nothing shows up.
Deleted MSN Messenger in Account Settings
Set up Yahoo Messenger in Account settings.
Whole bunch of @hotmail.com contacts appear in my Contacts list, along with a few Yahoo contacts. Not cool.
Deleted Yahoo account in Accounts Settings (so I'm left with SIP and GoogleTalk)
Deleted all extraneous contacts from Yahoo and MSN Messenger
Add New Contact
Add Detail
Can't seem to find MSN (Haze)
Add MSN Messenger Account in Account Settings again
Leave it for half an hours. Still no contacts show up
Add New Contact
Add Detail. MSN (Haze) still does not appear in the list. AOL, GoogleTalk, Yahoo, Email, Phone, Web Address, etc all appear in the Add Detail list, except MSN (Haze)

Figured I'm not so hard up for MSN Messenger since i have Pidgin working anyway.

It would be nice to be able to add ONLY MSN Messenger, GoogleTalk and Gizmo, seeing that I only use MSN Messenger and GoogleTalk these days anyway, and it would be nice that only contacts from these systems appear, and only these protocols show up in Add Detail.

I have reflashed my N800 three times already, and after spending the last hour setting up the correct aliases for all 150+ contacts in my buddy lists from MSN, Googletalk and Yahoo in Pidgin, I have my reservations about going down RTComm again and chancing another disappointment.

Again, I respect the fact that RTComm is in beta and hence I'm not really complaining about it, except that it's just not working for me, and I'm quietly rolling back to the more resource-intensive Pidgin. I would be happy to try RTComm again, if I could find a way to get MSN, Gizmo and GoogleTalk all working happily together on my N800 with RTComm
