1. open contacts app
2. open options (bottom right)
3. select merge contacts
4. press 'refresh' button
5. Voila!
(171 contacts merged! it said on my N9)

I accidently discovered it while merging contacts one by one.
Couldn't find any solution for merging contacts, hence posted.
