i have gmediaserver running on a dapper box to the point where it says: "Listening for control point connections", but my 770 doesn't see it on mediastreamer.

where should i start to fix this?

sort of fixed it- it was a matter of poking a hole in a firewall. now the server shows up, songs play- but they don't finish. i cannot get a song to play through to the end. any ideas?

Have a look here . It is some sort of "known issue" with libupnp (GMediaServer uses that library). Patch is simple, but it will require to rebuild upnp library.
Alternatively you can consider another UPNP server. As an example I'm using fuppes. It's not so stable as gmediaserver and still unfinished, but serves me pretty well.
