Just to make it more clear - after installing syslogd package, and running into this problem, just copy your /var/log/syslog file, upload it somewhere, and post in this thread (as link to upload, *not* whole syslog as quotation!).

As for dmesg, you don't need to install anything - you just open terminal, write dmesg, and put output here (also, important to do it quite immediately *after* you got hit by the problem).

For the records, no such issue here,modest works fine, same for mail notifications.

//Edit

freemangordon, how he is supposed to get dmesg output, if, when hit by the problem, he need to reboot device for getting out of it (desktop "freeze")?

I would say:
"gain ssh access from other machine before problem, and check if you can still invoke commands via ssh, when desktop is "frozen". If yes, get /var/log/syslog remotely (still via ssh, for example, copy it to microSD card inside N900), and for records, try killall hildon-desktop (to see, if desaktop comes back to life)"

Of course, as he is quite new user, it require him to install and configure OpenSSH or dropbear (which he won't regret, anyway, for other occasions).

Hey Freemangordon and Estel! Many thanks. I installed CSSU-thumb last night again. In the morning my N900 desktop freezes and after a reboot I found a new message. Then I ran apt-get update / upgrade. And one thing has been installed (I have forgotten, what exactely, something with "i..." or "l...") and since now the problem is away. The N900 seems to work without problem till now. But I would to be prepared: Where do I get the app "syslogd". I cannot find it in the Application Manager?

getting this error?
This should be fixed now (I made a mistake when reconfiguring the webserver).

@Acurus_:
You need to set application manager to show all packages, not only "user" section.

I have a freshly reflashed phone. Can I install CSSU Thumb as on the first page then install NITDroid?

Sure, why not? although, CSSU-thumb can't predict any mess, that you may create (or not) via installing nitroid. It just doesn't have anything to do, with each other.

Also, keep in mind, that it's still experimental, etc. If something won't work as it should (on cssu-thumb side, not with nitdroid ) and you would like to get help, you're supposed to post informative/educated report of problem, using proper tools (see what was asked from other people reporting here, for an example - cutting out repeated question for more mdetails, would save us 50% of this thread capacity).

I would really like if you try to be a little bit more informative when describing your problems. "...something with..." don't help much trying to find what is going on and why you are the only one amongst more than 400 users having that "freeze" problem.

@Estel - I need dmesg and syslog after the restart, not at the time of the "freeze"

@Estel

OK.

One more thing before I start, can I install in this order.
1. Install CSSU-Thumb2 then CSSU Testing or visa versa.
2. Install CSSU-Thumb2 then CSSU Stable or visa versa.
Can CSSU-Thumb2 work without CSSU testing?, as I'm not to keen on installing testing.
