palikao,

MeeCatalog is simply a graphical interface for repositories...So it depends on the repos you add for apps to appear...What improvements you want on it? IMO the more tools you have to manage applications the more trouble you are asking for...We have manage applications from settings and you can do same using the terminal so why require another app to duplicate efforts? Just because the UI is nicer?

Apps4Meego has been having issues since around a month so if you don't see all the apps in MeeCatalog from there its the repo's fault not MeeCatalog's...

I don't actually see why we need another Community Store...Once maemo.org transitions to the NFP maybe we can combine A4M and other repos into repo.maemo.org and it acts as the "Community Store"... Apps on Nokia Store are another thing which only Nokia can inform on its intention...

Well.. I don't think that thinking the way you think it's usefull..

Mine was only a proposal, that can be supported or not, and I've seen that someone is thinking in this direction..

It can deal with interface, yes, it can deal with programming.. the matter is only one: Nokia has no interest in developing apps and managing a store!

So.. a Community Store can be the auto-managing way, and the solution to attract developers.. or.. to create new developers..

You might be in for a surprise if you think a possible community store were to have non-free apps ;-).

I think this proposal is more about independence from Nokia as you never know what they stop supporting in the future. It's not about giving developers a bigger cut out of the sales :-).

Well, a community store may be a way, to get money for Hildon Foundation hosting & etc. For example 25% fee of every sold app, and allowance to use extras (but not extras-testing nor -devel) software.

If what I'm thinking doesn't match your thinking or isn't "useful" then convince me You can't be telling anyone who disagrees with your line of thinking that you are thinking in a not useful way...

Let me now elaborate on why I disagree with your proposal:
  • We can list free apps into repo.maemo.org once Nokia hands control this month to the NFP if the BoD of the NFP think such a move is suitable
  • Paid apps wouldn't be included obviously; currently they are via Nokia Store - How many of N9 users worldwide know about maemo.org? So you create an alternative paid-apps store something like Cydia are you going to get the same full userbase?
  • If you manage to get ALL users would you get all developers? See the number of good apps on Nokia Store that are no longer maintained; you think all those devs will suddenly bother to list on a new "Community Store"?
  • Look at appsformeego; even when it was working a huge number of free apps were not listed in it...Why?

Currently, you can download apps from the Nokia Store, from here on TMO, my-meego.com and n9-apps.com

The latter two are like an index of apps for the N9 while removing most RSS apps. Wouldn't it better to create a GUI for either n9-apps.com or my-meego.com since they are an index instead of doing something from scratch all over again?

n9-apps.com has Breeze which once set-up on your phone you can click install on your browser on your PC and if its a Store app, it opens Store for it otherwise the relevant file is downloaded for you to install...

Its always very easy to suggest to do something new; why not improve existing solutions? Why not make them more cohesive and work better with added functionality? Maybe a GUI for either of those two indexers can have top 10 apps, featured apps (free/paid) etc...

ehm.. you've not read what I wrote!!!
ahaha.. I wrote exactly what you have re-written!!!

Please, read the first post, and you'll find that I never wrote about creating a new store, I never wrote about any precise function, I never wrote about what you have to say ;-)

ok on keeping out payable apps, and having only free ones..
Cydia.. It can be a good reason!!!
People know mostly about Nokia Store 'cause they have it under their eyes.. sometimes it's not only sufficient acting on existing apps, but it's necessary to create new..
New happening are always good!

But.. my proposal didn't deal with that ;-)
I wrote about improving.. so that, in my opinion, MeeCatalog is too confused, not user-friendly (Apple rules in this case!!.. I'm not an iPhone-fan..), and doesn't contain any beta, any evolving process, any history..
The power of this community is in exchanging.. not in producing!

we can have an app store with ads, to found the hildon foundation and continue to update maemo5. We need a clear alternative to Ovi.
Let's migrate everything from the nokia circle, and make this phone totally opensource at the core. If someone want it, we should build archlinux with hildon desktop so we would have a maemo-like operating system totally opensource and supported by a huge community.

"Lets do it" does not write code. Just do it. Or help Skry.

It was already decided (afaik) that ads won't be used. Which makes perfect sense to me - if I want ads on my device, I will buy android one.

And what exactly is your problem with Nokia and OVI store? OVI store is not something bad, the problem is it is not attractive to developers. Because of the tiny user base. You can call it whatever you like and host it wherever you like, but until developers get interested in putting stuff there, it is a no go. And TBH, I can't imagine a way that could happen.
