My N9 used to consume 5mA when idle (with no internet connection), even with all apps installed. That happened since March 2012. In December, all of a sudden, it went from 5mA to 12mA, and I did absolutely nothing for that. It never went back to the weaker consumption. I tried uninstalling every app that might be doing this, to no avail.
So i decided to do a complete, "comprehensive" firmware flashing, deleting everything and restoring to default settings.
Even after that, with absolutely NO apps instaled (only Battery Usage), it's still consuming 12mA. And yes, it's been like that for weeks. The "device idle" option on Battery Usage seems to be taking the biggest hit, showing 1% Avg. load most of the time. When it was only 5mA, it always showed 0%.
Any ideas? I've searched and never found a similar issue.

Well there is this Smartsearch app, that uses battery to a considerable extent. When you disable that you can gain a drop in battery usage. Basically it disables its indexing function which is continuous.

Details could be found Here

However, when you disable this, You can't use it. and along with it, some other functions. Such as when changing ringtone from settings, when you want to change to a tune from your music section, you can't SEARCH it.

In other instance, you can't SEARCH attachments for an email. And similar things.

You could try using top to see if any processes are taking more CPU in the background than they should be. Signal strength can make a difference, so if there's no other change whatsoever in the phone this could still have an effect. TBH, though? 12mA isn't that high.

@khan.orak
I've disabled that on all situations, so I can safely say that's not the reason. Thanks anyway!

@Eztran
The issue is, from what I've seen, the issue is in the idle state, since my "device idle usage" went from 0% to 1% according to Battery Usage (which, apparently, is a big deal). And TOP command doesn't show what's happening when idle, only when the screen is on. I agree that 12mA isn't a lot, but i was used to 5mA with many background apps running, so I can say i'm spoiled!
By the way, i get 12mA even without a SIM inserted, so (unfortunately) i think it has nothing to do with signal strength

Idle consumption can be different in separate locations depending phones position from cell towers and what other connections are on. (feeds, FB, Twitter, 2G, 3G, Dual, etc.)

Battery Usage consumes power too but Your display the moust every time you touch it.

There is no point trying to keep idle at 5mA. Even 12- 20mA is good and this phone is made for conections. There are other phones with longet battery life or there are exta batterys too if needed.

Use it and enjoi...

Or maybe just the battery circuitry needs calibrating? Did you notice a drop in the battery life or just the idle current? Perhaps it was 12mA all along and the chip only just cottoned on.

@Wallace: the bigger consumption happens even without a SIM card... And completely offline. 12mA is fine, I'd just like to understand why this issue happened. As I mentioned, everything regarding configuration and options are exactly the same way as before, when i had 5mA...

@pichlo: since my device stays idle most of the time, i can say i noticed a drop. On the other hand, when using it (screen on), the usage power is exactly the same as before. The only issue is with the screen off. I guess the only thing I haven't done is let the device shut down itself (0% battery) and then fully recharge it. I don't think doing that makes a lot of sense and/or will fix my issue, but it's worth a shot, since i've done every thing you could imagine.

Phone can do background tasks, indeksing etc...

If battery lasts two days with your use good. If only 1 !/2 ok.
Dont wory too much, charge it wen needed. You can install Billboard and it tells you allvays how much battery % you have.

Sure it does, just SSH to the phone. Though I don't think it's going to be of much help.

Budaemon (battery-usage app) also uses some power. Another way to monitor idle power consumption would be with some simple script that greps the output of bmestat command at set intervals and saves results to a log file.

Minimum I've been able to get from completely idle phone is around 3mA average. (Standby screen disabled, all connections off, feed updates manual, power saving mode on) But even that with some use in between is going to climb to 4-5mA average.

With daily use, phonecalls, browsing the web etc. Average idle is often 7-15mA (This is because how "idle" is calculated, it's not like power consumption drops to the lowest level at the exact moment you lock the screen) so I wouldn't be worried of 12mA. Maybe it's simply that your usage profile has changed or - most likely IMO - that battery calibration has made reporting more accurate over time, which would also explain flashing having no effect.

SOLVED!

So, just a recap: when going to sleep, I let the device idling with the same usage scenario as always, and 8 hours later, Battery Usage was showing 12mA, and a 10% decrease in battery life. It used to be 5mA before, with a 4% decrease. That issue happened for almost 3 months, so I'm sure it was something 'big'.

So, what I did? I simply let the phone on, draining battery until it shut down itself. Then i recharged it, and everything was back to normal. Tested it this night and got a 4mA avg idle usage, and a 4% drain in 8 hours.

Maybe that's a new way to try fixing high battery usage on idle? Pretty strange, IMHO. I actually have no technical idea why this solved my issue. Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone who tried to help in this thread!
